Whaling Is So 19th Century – Or Not?

Photo: Greenpeace

Photo: Greenpeace

When reading “Moby Dick” in school, it was the whale´s story that intrigued me, not Captain Ahab´s or Ishmael´s. Have we evolved from the brutality of the 19th century? When watching videos about today´s whaling one might think we were stuck in some terrible historical loop that keeps repeating itself.

“In less than three weeks at this year’s International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting, the country of Tanzania could be the deciding vote to create (or kill) a plan for creating a whale and dolphin sanctuary for the South Atlantic Ocean. ”

Wild Horses Need Shade, Water, Food – And Room to Run Wild

Bildschirmfoto 2014-08-11 um 12.56.29 Bildschirmfoto 2014-08-29 um 14.45.57

The great Wild West will get less wild and lose all of its appeal if the rounding up of wild horses and burros continues. These round-ups are especially egregious since there are no holding places available for the animals.

“Despite public outcry, the BLM wants to continue rounding up America’s wild horses and burros–even though most of their holding facilities are inhumane without shade and shelter and are already stocked full with 50,000 native equids. The Burns Amendment to the 1971 Free Roaming Wild Horse and Burro Protection Act puts ALL those in holding at-risk of going to slaughter. This is very dangerous.”

Is It Social to Watch Tortured Animals?

When circuses send animals into the arena, these animals are not there for their own pleasure or fun and would never willingly do what they are forced to do. More and more former employees of circuses have started speaking up, telling horrifying stories about how animals are tortured to perform.

Ringling Brothers is no exception. Bullhooks are just one instrument for hurting elephants being used over and over again.

If you want to be entertained go see Cirque du Soleil or some other circus where you can be awed by the extraordinary performance of beautiful people.

“According to former circus employees, Ringling trainers routinely beat elephants and jab them with sharp metal bullhooks in order to force them to perform. At least 30 elephants, including four babies, have died since 1992, including an 8-month-old baby elephant named Riccardo who was euthanized after he fractured his hind legs when he fell from a circus pedestal.”

Nestlé Moving Towards Animal Awareness?

In a recent article in the New York Times, Nestlé is described as moving forward towards building pressure on their suppliers for more humane treatments of animals.

For some of us, this might still be a far way to animal welfare, but Nestlé, being one of the global players in the food industry, turning at least some of their attention towards the plight of animals can be seen as the success of all of those speaking up for animals.

Nestlé sells many brands using milk, so changing their attitude might make a big difference to many lives in the milk producing hellish machinery.

Summer and Butterflies = Soon No More?

Photo: Hope Ryden

Photo: Hope Ryden

Every summer, around the little lake in our neighborhood I used to see an abundance of monarch butterflies, serendipitous bliss. But they might vanish due to loss of habitat – and milkweed.

“Beginning late summer through early fall, the monarchs you see in your yard emerging from their chrysalides have one main focus: eat to fatten up for their upcoming migrations. Winter habitats for these beauties range from coastal California for those west of the Rocky Mountains to central Mexico for those to the east. This epic journey can span 3,000 miles!

Scientists say habitat destruction of milkweed in the US—the only plant on which monarchs lay eggs—is the main concern.”

Please read more about monarchs and help them by planting milkweed in your yard

Pigs Would Support Punjab´s Decision

Bildschirmfoto 2014-07-24 um 11.55.17

Is Punjab going to lead the way in preventing cruelty toward pigs? If only other countries would follow in the footsteps of this country´s grand decision:

“Back in June we posted on Facebook about shutting down India’s only gestation crate facility, a swine farm seeking to introduce this intensive confinement practice into the country. Sows confined in gestation crates aren’t able to turn around and often can’t lie down comfortably for months at a time. Such extreme confinement causes physical and mental suffering for these intelligent, sociable animals.

Closing the facility was a good start, but we also wanted to win broader and long-lasting protection for pigs, and we have good news to report! With further encouragement, the Government of Punjab has now issued an official direction making this type of intensive confinement an offense under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Officials in the government confirmed with us this week that their focus is now on alternatives.”

What to Do When Threats towards Companion Animals Prolong Abusive Relationships?

Photo: ALDF

Photo: ALDF

Women (and sometimes men, too) who are in an abusive relationship will stay when they do not know where to take their beloved pet. Holding the pet hostage therefore is another form of torture. And so far, there often is hardly any choice for those being abused.

“Many perpetrators of domestic violence threaten violence against companion animals as a way of exerting control over victims who are hesitant to leave their abusers without a safe solution for their pets. Because few domestic violence shelters are equipped to house companion animals, many survivors return to their abusers or delay leaving in the first place — out of concern for the safety of pets they must leave behind when seeking refuge at a women’s shelter. The PAWS Act fills this critical void by extending broader, more uniform protection for companion animals and by making sure victims of domestic violence have a safe place to go with their pets.”
