Students Need Not Despair: There Are Alternatives to Dissecting Real Animals

The Digital Frog

To motivate students in class to learn it is important to keep them interested in the subject. In the beginning of each school year many students come back from their summer break eager to find out what the new classes will bring (well, most kids would probably prefer a longer summer break but hope for not too boring classes).

Especially in biology and anatomy classes students will learn about how the body functions, if taught right a fascinating subject. Sadly, most schools have not yet learned that there are several humane tools for teaching out there.

“It’s September, and millions of students and educators are back in school—it’s a time of new beginnings. Unfortunately, the new school year will bring a cruel end for millions of animals, including cats, frogs, sharks, fetal pigs, mink, who will be dissected in classroom demonstrations.”

Good News: Wyoming Wolves Protected Under The Endangered Species Act

Photo: Jess Lee

It is wonderful to share some good news:

“A federal judge ruled that Wyoming wolves must once again be protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Today, it is no longer legal in Wyoming to shoot wolves on sight, chase them down with vehicles, or gas wolf pups in their dens—all of which were permissible under Wyoming’s flawed wolf management scheme.”

California Sprawling Suburbs vs. Mountain Lions (and other animals)

Photo: NWF

Photo: NWF

When people move to the suburbs not only is land taken away from animals, but the infrastructure that makes these places livable and affordable destroy whatever was left for wild animals to survive. The patchwork habitats are clearly not appropriate for survival.

It should be crucial for all planning commissions to take into account the needs of wildlife in the area.

“It’s clear that southern California’s mountain lions need our help; and right now, we have an important opportunity to do just that.

Help secure permanent protections for mountain lion habitat in southern California—urge President Obama to designate the San Gabriel Mountains as a new national monument today.

Mountain lions need large areas of open space for their “home ranges” to search for mates or prey. In the Santa Monica Mountains surrounding Los Angeles, development of multilane highways through their habitat has forced some mountain lions and other wildlife to attempt to cross these heavily trafficked roadways; and sadly, not all have survived the perilous journey.”

Beauty through Animal Testing = Ugly

Photo: AAVS

Photo: AAVS

Despite what some people still try to make you believe it is completely unnecessary to test cosmetics, shampoos, soaps, etc. on animals prior to putting them on the market for humans. Many countries world wide have proven this and many are moving away from animal testing.

“Election season is a perfect time to communicate with your legislators about the issues that matter to you—like animal testing! The Humane Cosmetics Act would ban the use of animals in testing cosmetics and their ingredients, as well as the sale of these products. Consumers in the U.S. have long been using their purchasing power to support cruelty-free products, and industry support for humane cosmetics has also been growing. Additionally, effective alternatives to animal testing exist and are widely accepted.

Now it’s time for Congress to do the right thing by passing the Humane Cosmetics Act!

There is no U.S. law requiring companies to test their cosmetics and ingredients on animals. However, internationally, there are laws that ban this practice. The European Union enacted a ban on animal tested cosmetics in 2004, and Israel and India passed similar laws in 2007 and 2013 respectively. The U.S. should also enact a ban on animal tested cosmetics.”

Scarily, Fake Fur Sometimes is Bloody Real Fur

Photo: HSUS

Photo: HSUS

Sometimes, you cannot see it, feel it nor smell it: those fluffy add-ons on jackets, caps, scarves or coats could be from an animal. And sadly, the life of an animal is sometimes worth even less than the fake fur. And worse still, sometimes the whole coat, jacket or vest is the skin of an animal.

“For the second time in less than a year, Kohl’s was discovered by The Humane Society of the United States to be selling real fur as “faux.” This time, we found a raccoon dog fur-trimmed jacket advertised at Kohl’s as “faux.” With many warm and fashionable alternatives available, there’s no reason to wear animal fur and no reason for Kohl’s to sell it.”

Study in Torture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Photo: Dr. Ruth Decker

Photo: Dr. Ruth Decker

If you find the idea of taking a baby away from its mother disturbing and cruel, it is time to speak up against the proposed studies of the University of Wisconsin-Madison wants. The non-human beings are to be used because their emotionality is so similar to human beings.

“Newborn monkeys are to be forcibly separated from their mothers and kept in isolation, with nothing more than a stuffed toy to comfort them. They’ll be subjected to test after test specifically designed to cause fear–including being confronted with a live Kingsnake. They will then be killed so their brain chemicals can be measured.

There’s still time to stop this, please sign now!

This is an experiment that has been proposed at the University of Wisconsin–a study with so many questions that some scientists are demanding it be cancelled. They say the experiments will be of no measurable benefit to people, while causing tremendous suffering to highly intelligent and social animals.

Notably, according to the proposal, rhesus monkeys are the subjects of this proposed study because of their “similarity to humans in social behavior, emotion, hormonal responses and brain structure.” In other words, they suffer just like us.”

War Zones: Human Suffering Always Leads to Animal Suffering

Photo: Four Paws

Photo: Four Paws

The conflict in the Middle East has left people homeless, children orphaned, nearly everybody suffering. And in the midst of the misery the animals hardly have a chance of help. Some organizations still take the risks and try to help these animals in desperate need.

“The conflict in the Gaza strip that went on for weeks caused not only human casualties but affected animals as well. The zoo in North Gaza was heavily damaged during the conflict. More than eighty animals in the zoo perished. The twenty surviving animals are now finally receiving medical assistance. The animal rescue organization FOUR PAWS was able to get access to the heavily damaged zoo and provide lifesaving medicine and food for the animals, as well as to restore the water supply.”

A Glimmer of Light at the End of the Tunnel for Whales and Dolphins

Photo: Greenpeacce

Photo: Greenpeacce

Even though the largest part of the earth is covered by water, and most of this water is in the oceans, humans have reduced the safe living space of whales and dolphins so much so, that the chances of becoming extinct has risen dangerously over the past decades.

Most of the time, news from the conferences concerning the exploitation of the oceans is disastrous for the animals. This year, for the first time, the Greenpeace correspondent returned with a bit of positive information.

“The International Whaling Commission met this past week in Portoroz, Slovenia. …

The IWC is extremely polarized, very much like our current Congress. The competing interests of the pro-whaling nations versus the nations prioritizing whale conservation has left this institution in gridlock for years. This year’s multiple gains for whale and dolphin conservation is a fabulous achievement.”

Save the Date for Elephants and Rhinos: October 4th, 2014

Bildschirmfoto 2014-09-22 um 09.09.57

Traditionally, October 4th is World Animal Day. For over 80 years, this day has been marked as the day to spread the word on animal awareness. There will be many events, here is one spread out over all continents:

In Defense of Animals is organizing a March for Elephants and Rhinos:

“In Africa, four elephants are illegally killed for their ivory every hour with only 300,000 to 500,000 alive today. Every nine hours a rhino is killed for his/her horn and it’s estimated that fewer than 22,000 African rhino now remain. In South Africa, more lions survive now in captivity, where they are bred for petting zoos and canned hunts, than roam in the wild. Poaching helps to support terrorist activities and is contributing to the destabilization of Africa – killing humans and animals. This tragic state of the world’s iconic animals will soon lead to their extinction, unless we collectively come together to reverse the current trend.”
