BP = Believe Publicity?

When the first pictures were published showing how the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico had affected not only everybody living in this part of the world, but also flora, fauna and the water many of us were in shock. This major catastrophe has moved from front page news to the back of the papers, and in most cases also to the back of the minds.

“It’s been four years since the BP Deepwater Horizon oil disaster, the largest in U.S. history, claimed 11 lives and gushed oil into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days.

After the disaster, BP spent hundreds of millions of dollars on a PR blitz promising it would take responsibility.

But now that BP thinks everyone’s forgotten, it’s in court trying to backpedal its way out of paying billions in damages leaving behind the dolphins, turtles, wildlife and people who call the Gulf home.

BP is even publicly shaming Gulf residents, running full-page ads accusing them of fraud while refusing to pay billions in claims.”

Good News that Needs Some More Help

Photo: PeTA

Pigeons more often than not have no lobby. But through an organized campaign they got lucky – and help from the police. Now this first victory needs some more legal standing – and support.

“Following PETA’s groundbreaking exposé of Taiwan’s pigeon-racing industry, which revealed widespread gambling and bird deaths, police raided the largest pigeon-racing club in Taiwan, took club officials to the station for questioning, confiscated tens of thousands of dollars, and froze nearly $4 million in apparently illegal gambling proceeds in the club’s bank account. The hundreds of thousands of bird deaths per racing season are still being investigated by authorities for violations of Taiwan’s cruelty-to-animals laws.”

When Cheating Is Deadly

Photo: Center for Biological Diversity

There are people who argue that hunting belongs to the oldest traditions of mankind. This reasoning makes these people believe that it still is correct to kill animals through hunting them down. Arguing back that we also do not want to go back to living in caves might not help here.

In any case: hunting animals who are trapped, bated, tethered, or in any form incapacitated equals torture and murder.

“The state of Alaska is allowing inhumane, unsportsmanlike and scientifically unsound hunting of wolves and bears — and we need your help to stop it.

The controversial practices include baiting brown and black bears into easy shooting range using greasy meat, donuts and dog food; killing bears in their winter dens; and “harvesting” wolf pups and bear cubs.

If not for permanent protective measures now proposed by the National Park Service, even wildlife in our national preserves could be victims of these extreme, cruel practices, allowed elsewhere in the state by Alaska’s Board of Game.”

Good News: Seventh Generation Got the Message

Photo: AAVS

Photo: AAVS

It is clear that through social media, petitions, e-mails and other forms of communication companies feel the pressure of the consumers and are able to react fast. So adding your voice to a petition, writing an e-mail or picking up the phone makes a difference – for many animals in this case.

“After receiving tens of thousands of calls and e-mails and after 85,000 angry consumers signed our petition, Seventh Generation now understands the importance of animal-protection issues to consumers, and it has cleaned up its act! The company reversed course and signed on to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine’s letter to Congress acknowledging that animal tests are “slow, unreliable, and expensive” and calling for non-animal methods and strategies to be used first and foremost, and it has committed to advocating for this principle in all of its lobbying efforts.”

Sheep Like to Keep Their Wool

Usually, we get to see these pictures of fluffy whit sheep roaming happily over green meadows. But there is nothing happy going on when sheep are sheared. It is time to get this picture out of the heads and reflect on what is done to other beings for human comfort.

“J.Crew and Ralph Lauren saw this video and did nothing:

A Bit of Shark is in Every Fish

Photo: Shark Facts

Photo: Shark Facts

Sharks have a hard time getting a good lobby. People keep thinking of these animals as man-eating vicious creatures, out there to get you. But it is not the human who needs to be afraid of the shark, but the other way around. Even though sharks have extraordinary senses to survive in their natural habitat, humans have reduced the shark population by the millions.

“Fishermen in Indonesia catch an average of 109,000 metric tons of shark per year, more than any other country in the world. While catching tuna, fishermen routinely snare endangered sharks, such as the hammerhead. Yet the Indonesian government agreed to protect sharks over a decade ago.

In 1999, Indonesia signed the United Nations’ International Plan for Action to conserve sharks. Despite this commitment, fishermen continue to profit from valuable shark fins and meat. The lack of management regulations for most shark species is a huge problem – there are no catch quotas and no fishing bans.”

Does a University Need an Elephant?

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

Many universities have traditions, most of them are fun for all. But having an elephant walk for a university? Together with the advancement of knowledge the advancement of learning should be proven here. Let the students be creative and start a new tradition – without cruelty towards other beings.

“Despite learning of the cruelty and abuse endured by elephants who are exploited for publicity stunts, Texas A&M University is moving forward with plans to maintain its archaic tradition of hosting live elephants as part of its annual Elephant Walk, an event designed to pay homage to exiting seniors. Join PETA in urging Texas A&M to wake up to the age of compassion for others!

There is no excuse for an institution of higher education to be promoting cruelty, especially among this generation of compassionate and socially aware students. Speak up for exploited elephants TODAY and ask Texas A&M to be true to its core values by compassionately carrying on its tradition without the use of a live elephant.”

The Ugly Side of Beauty

Photo:PeTA

Photo:PeTA

The European Union banned all testing on animals for cosmetics. People thought this was the beginning of the end to all animal testing. Sadly, with the opening of new markets, mostly those in China, it seems to be the end of this beginning. Several companies have gone back to torturing animals for beauty´s sake – and to make more money.

“There’s nothing beautiful about dripping chemicals into gentle rabbits’ eyes or rubbing substances onto their abraded skin—yet cosmetics companies such as Estée Lauder and Revlon are paying to have it done anyway.

After more than 20 years of operating cruelty-free, these companies are paying for archaic product tests that poison and kill rabbits, mice, guinea pigs, and other animals, in order to sell their products in China. It’s a disappointing backslide into cruel testing policies—and one that Estée Lauder and Revlon made in secret, without informing their customers about the change.”

Good News: No More Bunny Torture at French Connection

Photo:PeTA

Photo:PeTA

Screen Shot 2014-10-21 at 12.04.54 PM

Another great story on how much you can do to save animals from being tortured by simply signing a petition and speaking up against something as unnecessary as rabbit hair in clothing.

“After receiving more than 100,000 e-mails from supporters of PETA and its international affiliates, U.K.-based retail giant French Connection announced that it has committed to banning the sale of all products made with angora wool. French Connection joins dozens of other companies—including Gap Inc., Lands’ End, QVC, and Express, Inc.—in banning angora. This just shows that, when the public speaks, even major corporations listen, so please ask J.Crew and Ralph Lauren to drop wool immediately.”
