How To Choose Compassion Over Gluttony

Photo:HSI

Photo:HSI

Is it worth fighting for this one pig? Why make such a big deal about this one animal? Because this one pig stands for so many who are being sent off to slaughter. This one pig can open the eyes of many to show compassion towards a being who cannot escape his fatal fate without your help.

“As part of its Hog Wild Tire Sale event, Granite City Tire & Auto in Alexandria, Minnesota, is planning to send a pig to slaughter and give his or her flesh to the customer who can most closely guess the animal’s weight. Pigs are deeply intelligent, affectionate animals who feel pain and fear, just like the cats and dogs many of us share our homes with.

Granite City Tire & Auto ignored PETA’s request for the pig to be sent to a sanctuary instead of the slaughterhouse, so we’re urging local residents to make their voices heard and let Granite City Tire & Auto know that this barbaric sales ploy is appalling and will not be tolerated by the community.

Please contact Granite City Tire & Auto and urge the company to allow PETA to send the pig who is scheduled for slaughter to a sanctuary instead:

Let Granite City Tire & Auto know that you will not patronize a business that celebrates cruelty to animals and that you will ask your friends and family to refuse to do so as well.”

Please help this one pig, thank you!

Good News: Virgin America No Longer Supports Sea World

images

Thank you to all who spoke up for the animals at Sea World. The more voices there are, the more they will be heard and there is a chance of saving the lives of animals just by spreading the word.

“After hearing from PETA, Virgin America, the U.S.-based airline that serves several popular cities across North America, removed SeaWorld from its rewards program. Virgin America joins a growing number of travel companies, including Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and STA Travel, that have made the compassionate decision not to promote SeaWorld. However, Virgin Group—the conglomerate that formed Virgin America—is a separate company, which is why we still need to urge Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Group to stop promoting SeaWorld.”

Who Can Outrun Climate Change?

Photo: USFWS Mountain Prairie

Photo: USFWS Mountain Prairie

It is safe to answer “nobody” to this question. No matter how fast you can run, there is simply no chance to get away from climate change. This year is heading to a new world record for being the hottest year since the recording of temperatures. Here is another animal with no place to run:

“Pronghorn are known for being the fastest land mammals in North America.

But a pronghorn cannot outrun climate change, which is expected to greatly impact habitat in the western U.S. through worsened droughts and wildfires.

Right now, the Environmental Protection Agency is deciding whether or not to establish new pollution standards for the oil and gas industry that could help wildlife in the West.”

Do We Need More Than Six Wolves?

Photo: McDonald Wildlife Photographer, HSUS

Photo: McDonald Wildlife Photographer, HSUS

There still are several states in the United States where wolves live. This is actually quite surprising, since they nearly had been hunted down to extinction. Only a very few were left and, thanks to public awareness, the wolf population has grown again.

If you live in Michigan or know someone in Michigan, please let them know that there is a chance to save the lives of wolves in this state.

“On November 4, Michigan voters will decide whether wolves live or die.

In 1974, just six wolves remained in Michigan.

They had been hunted for bounties, poisoned and driven to the brink of extinction. Thankfully, at this critical moment, they were listed under the Endangered Species Act, and wolves were finally protected. It has taken nearly 40 years to restore the population.

But wolves are once again caught in the crosshairs. Recently stripped of their federal protections, state by state has opened fire on wolves.

We did not save the wolves from extinction just so the trophy hunters and fur trappers would have more of them to kill.”

Is Boiling Hot Water Painful?

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

Some people still believe that animals, especially lobsters, do not feel pain. They probably also believe that pigs can fly. Dropping someone into boiling hot water is definitely painful – and deadly – for any being, also for lobsters.

“On November 8, St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Huntsville, Alabama, plans to hold its annual Lobsterfest event, at which approximately 2,500 lobsters will be boiled alive —an act that researcher Gordon Gunter described in the journal Science as “unnecessary torture.” When dropped into scalding water, lobsters whip their bodies wildly and scrape the sides of the pot in a desperate attempt to escape. PETA has received complaints from Huntsville residents who were horrified to learn that lobsters will be tortured as part of an annual church fundraiser.”

Are Animals Plants?

Photo: IDA

Photo: IDA

At first, this sounds like a pleasant idea: encouraging people to use their garden to grow their own supply of food. For a plant-based diet this could be terrific. But what will happen if you let everybody raise their chickens, turkeys, geese, or even bigger animals in their back yard?

“Please help IDA support vegan author and activist Colleen Patrick-Goudreau to stop backyard slaughter in Oakland, California. Tell the Oakland City Council that animals are not plants. Ask them to reject the proposal on urban agriculture that classifies animals as plants by including them under “Community Gardens.” This proposal would allow people to raise “livestock” in the city without needing a Conditional Use Permit. “If this passes, it will have negative impacts on thousands of animals for decades to come,” says Goudreau. She encourages everyone in Oakland to get involved to stop the slaughter and cruelty before it begins.

Backyard Slaughter means:

  • Neglected or abandoned “livestock” will be dumped at the local shelter leading to more dogs and cats being euthanized.
  • The city has a responsibility to promote the consumption of more plant foods versus animal foods with the rise of heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, and obesity.
  • Animal agriculture includes the sights, sounds, and smells of unregulated slaughter, which impacts the safety and well-being of neighbors.
  • Wildlife will be attracted to the area, increasing human-wildlife conflicts.”

Can an Animal Live Without Skin?

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

What a stupid question you might think. But most people never think about this when they buy new shoes, a stylish handbag or look for a matching belt. All the leather is made from animal skin and there is no pleasant way of getting this skin.

We are fortunate, though, since nowadays there are many alternatives to leather, you only need to check before you buy that fun jacket in the window.

“PETA is known for its campaigns against slaughterhouses and the fur industry, but many people have never considered the plight of animals used for leather. Every year, the global leather industry slaughters more than a billion animals, including goats and even dogs and cats. Take a look at our photos and videos from inside the leather trade and see if you can ever look at leather the same way again.”

How to Get Safely to the Other Side of the Road

Photo: National Park Service

Photo: National Park Service

Urban areas against rural parts of the world. Who are the first to lose? The animals that need to go from one part of their habitat to another. In several countries around the world wildlife crossings have been built. These crossings, either bridges or tunnels, make it possible for wildlife to travel without having to fear for their life when crossing highways. It is a win-win situation: people and animals are kept safe.

Mountain lions and other vulnerable wildlife in the hills surrounding Los Angeles are trapped by heavily trafficked freeways cutting through their habitat areas—and many are dying trying to make it across freeways to roam or search for food.

But we have an opportunity to provide safe passage for mountain lions in this vital habitat area by creating a wildlife crossing.

Help mountain lions roam their habitat by adding your voice of support for a wildlife crossing. ”

Horns of Flames

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

There are beautiful traditions, like birthday candles, and there are terrifying traditions, like setting bulls on fire. If you want a tradition that involves fire you should use something non animated, not a living being.

“Every year in November, a festival called Toro Jubilo is held in Soria, Spain, during which balls of flammable tar (or pitch) are attached to the horns of bulls and then set on fire. The terrified animals, either tied to stakes in public squares or released to run madly through the streets, burn in agony for hours, the blazing tar scorching their faces and bodies. Video footage of this horror can be seen here.”
