A Live Frog Is the Best Frog, also for Learning

Screen Shot 2015-04-12 at 2.40.30 AM

Children and students are curious by nature and that is good. But it is incomprehensible why they must be taught how to kill an animal to learn something about nature and specifically more about animals. How can we believe that compassion for animals could result from cutting an animal apart?

“April is National Frog Month – an important reminder that millions of these amazing animals are taken from the wild each year to be used for biology lessons. Frogs cannot be successfully bred in captivity and must be taken from their natural habitats. Removed from our wetlands, they suffer in transport and embalming. And, dissecting once-living frogs contributes to our ecological imbalance and further compromises nature’s fragile resources. As a keystone species, dissecting frogs contributes to not only their decline but to that of other wildlife populations as well. It exposes students to toxic chemicals and in turn, contaminates our environment as formaldehyde-ridden body parts need to be disposed when the class is done.”

If you know any students who have to dissect frogs please pass this on. If you know any teachers please pass this on. If you know anyone in the school system please pass this on.

How Is a Chicken Turned into Meat? By Torture

Mercy for Animals

Mercy for Animals

Many people love to eat chicken. But would they enjoy seeing what the chickens had to go through before landing on their plate? Probably not. As long as there are meat eaters there will be factories processing live animals. But do these animals need to suffer before being killed? No. But the animals need help to protect them from all the cruelty.

“In the last few weeks, both The New York Times (http://bit.ly/GFSNYTKristof) and USA Today (http://bit.ly/GFSUSAToday), two of the largest newspapers in the country, have slammed the horrific cruelty to chickens our undercover video exposed at a Gordon Food Service supplier. USA Today has even stated that “there’s a big space between what’s legal and what’s right” and that “none of this is necessary.” Over 100,000 of you who signed this petition agree!

Could you take a minute today to call Gordon Food Service’s headquarters? Please call Gordon Food Service at 800-968-4164 and demand that the company stop torturing chickens, ask for CEO Jim Gordon, and leave a polite voice mail telling him that you want chickens to suffer less and Gordon Food Service to implement a meaningful animal welfare policy. You can also email jim.gordon@gfs.com and info@gfs.com

Please help by making a phone call, sharing the information, spreading the word.

Greyhounds: Running for Their Life

Dog racing seems so old fashioned for those of us who think of it as torturous. But sadly, there still are people out there who have no idea that this is not entertainment and certainly no fun for the animals.

“There is a bill that will help greyhounds now moving through the House and we need Florida residents to send a strong message for all members to Vote Yes on House Bill 1233. Click here for instructions:” http://www.grey2kusa.org/eNEWS/G2K-040915.html

If you live in Florida or know someone who lives there please help, share and spread the word.

Saving One Elephant at a Time

photo: PeTA

photo: PeTA

In the last weeks we have heard news about some circuses thinking about retiring their elephants – but not before 2018. That means three more long years imprisoned and tortured for “entertainment”. Most zoos should at least follow suit since most of them are not capable of caring adequately for the lives of those imprisoned in their care. And some elephants need immediate help due to their health status. Three more years in their current situation is a death sentence. Asha is one of these animals.

“Local news outlets are reporting that Natural Bridge Zoo will remain closed for the foreseeable future. The facility was scheduled to reopen the weekend of April 4 after being closed for the winter, but on April 3, 2015, a judge refused to restore the facility’s state permit, which was suspended following numerous violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act. When the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries suspended the facility’s state permit on March 9, 2015, it stated that “many of the animals are confined under unsanitary and inhumane conditions.” We will continue to keep you informed of any developments. If you haven’t already taken action, please sign our petition urging the zoo to retire Asha the elephant.

The Natural Bridge Zoo (NBZ) in Virginia has held the elephant Asha under deplorable conditions for decades and denied her the companionship of other elephants, which is devastating for such a highly social animal. Join PETA in urging NBZ proprietors Karl and Debbie Mogensen to prioritize Asha’s well-being by retiring her to an accredited sanctuary.”

Sea Creatures and Their Hearing

Screen Shot 2015-04-12 at 2.22.14 AM

Noise pollution is not only an issue above the water but more and more below the water, too. Many creatures of the oceans have had to adapt to the interference of noise but not always successfully. A new threat is the seismic blasting that takes place in several different regions of the Atlantic. Warnings have come up over the past few years, but so far no one has stepped up and stopped this new torture on animals.

Since “Companies are lining up to begin seismic blasting in the Atlantic. This precursor to offshore oil drilling subjects the marine environment to dynamite-like sound blasts that can go on for weeks on end. The result? As many as 138,000 dolphins and whales could suffer injury or possibly even death.”

Must Beauty and Cosmetics Equal Animal Torture? No!

Screen Shot 2015-04-08 at 3.24.50 AM

More and more countries are rethinking their policies on testing products, whether old or new ones, on animals. This is leading to changes in the law – luckily in favor of the animals. The European Union – all 28 countries – has banned testing on animals for cosmetics. And more are following suit.

“New Zealand just became the first Australasian country to ban cosmetics animal testing. Earlier this week, an amendment to the Animal Welfare Act was passed, reflecting the nation’s desire for humane beauty products.”

If you are near Fairfax, Virginia, next week, please come and support the anti-cruelty demonstration:

“The Ringling Bros. circus is coming to Fairfax, Virginia, and animals need your help! In order to force elephants to perform tricks, trainers beat them with sharp metal bullhooks. Lions and tigers are whipped and beaten. Ringling has announced that it will phase out its elephant acts by 2018, but retirement for these animals needs to come now. Please help put an end to this cruelty by joining local PETA supporters in rallying against the use of all animals in circuses.”

Strength in Numbers: British Parliament Votes on Dog Meat Trade

photo: soidog.org

photo: soidog.org

The more people make their voices heard, the higher chances are that there will be a change. If signing a petition against something you want to change seems like a drop in the bucket, think again. It might be the drop that brings the water to the boil.

“Want to see something powerful? Just look at your own signature.

It’s helped take the fight against dog meat traders all the way to the UK House of Commons. Which means international pressure is growing to end this despicable trade.”

Please sign the petition even if you do not live in the UK:

One More Step Closer to Cracking Down on Puppy Mills

photo_HSUS

photo_HSUS

This definitely is a step in the right direction: as long as there still are pet stores selling live animals there needs to be some strong regulations where these animals come from.

“Great news! Gov. Terry McAuliffe has signed legislation that will prohibit Virginia pet stores from acquiring dogs from some of the worst puppy mills in the nation. The new law will also crack down on unregulated sales of dogs and cats at flea markets, parking lots and rest stops.

HSUS Virginia State Director Matthew Gray said, ´We applaud Governor McAuliffe and the Virginia General Assembly for enacting real, tangible protections, not just for puppies, but also for all Virginians who are seeking to add a dog or cat to their family.´”

Thank you to all who supported this new law.

“BREAKING NEWS: Advocates win — BLM Cancels Roundup Following Protect Mustangs’ and FOA’s Court Victory

Nevada’s beloved Pine Nut Herd from ‘The Misfits’ escapes horrible helicopter stampede

RENO, NV. (March 25, 2015)—After U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks’ Feb. 11 decision to grant Protect Mustangs’ and Friends of Animals’ (FoA) a motion for a preliminary injunction to stop the proposed roundup of more than 300 wild horses on the 98,000 acre Nevada Pine Nut Herd Management Area (HMA), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced today it has officially canceled the roundup. The famous herd from ‘The Misfits’ continues to live in freedom thanks to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and justice in federal court.”
