Good News: TripAdvisor Will Stop Selling Tickets to Some of the Cruelest Tourist Activities

There was a time when it was believed that dolphins enjoyed swimming with humans. That might have been true when the animals were able to swim with someone by choice but being held captive to perform this kind of action is cruel and inhumane.

There also might have been a time when elephants would have helped a human by letting this person sit on their back. But being forced to carry tourists around has nothing to do with choice or pleasure or freedom.

And to believe that baby tigers would willingly leave their mothers to sit on a tourist’s lap is either very naive or worse.

Trip Advisor has listened. The company will stop supporting this kind of cruelty.

14 Reasons Not To Visit Zoos – In Pictures

Please share this information widely, brought to my attention by Animalista Untamed:

Animalista Untamed

“These tragic pictures left me speechless. Please look into the eyes of all the animals. They tell their own story more poignantly than any words of mine. And the message they give is simple. Help us. End this.”

Virginia McKenna

Haunting pictures of animals trapped behind bars in Europe’s zoos have been captured by international wildlife charity, the Born Free Foundation. The powerful exhibition was launched by the organisation to highlight, what they see as, the poor standards of animal care at many zoos in the European Union.

Keith Taylor, MEP and the Green Party’s animals spokesperson, said the images show the “urgent need” to improve conditions and regulatory enforcement, both in the UK and in the rest of the EU.

Good News: Trip Advisor Will Stop Supporting Cruel Wildlife Experiences

There is strength in numbers. The more people sign petitions and speak up against animal cruelty, the better chances are that those involved will listen:

“TripAdvisor announced they will stop selling tickets to cruel wildlife experiences where tourists have direct physical contact with captive wild animals.

As the world’s largest travel site, the influence TripAdvisor has on the industry is immense and the impact they can have for animals is enormous. This is a significant step towards ending elephant rides, tiger selfies, swimming with dolphins and other forms of cruel tourist entertainment.

The power of the people

Over the past six months, more than 558,000 supporters across the world including around 70,000 Australians called upon TripAdvisor to stop profiting from the sale of tickets to cruel wildlife tourist attractions. And they listened!

In addition to ceasing the sale of tickets we will work with TripAdvisor as they establish an animal education portal on their website to help millions of tourists become aware of the cruelties wild animals face for tourism entertainment.

There is more work to be done

Sadly, however, certain venues that involve animal suffering where direct contact doesn’t occur will still be bookable via TripAdvisor or its Viator brand.”

There is more work to be done, so please keep spreading the word on animal awareness, thank you!

Breed Labels: When Guesses Turn Into Predictions

A wonderful post on the subject of how a label can ruin the life of a being – and what to do instead:

As we travel around the country, having conversations with shelters and rescues about the “pit bull” dogs in their care, we find that there are always a few big a-ha! moments that help people understand that all dogs are individuals just a bit better.

One of the more exciting moments typically happens during our Labels & Language presentation where we discuss the role of breed labeling in shelters and the assumptions we make about dogs based on those labels.

The talk helps shelters understand a number of concepts that apply not only to “pit bull” dogs, but to ALL the dogs in their care.

This one being of utmost importance:

How a dog is labeled or how they look on the outside, is not an indication of past or future behavior or their suitability for a particular adoption placement.

Too often, we make incorrect assumptions about dogs based…
