Animals = He/She or It?

What looks like a grammatical question is in reality a question of life in freedom or in captivity. As long as animals are treated as things in court it is extremely difficult to have the law support animal welfare. It remains more or less good will of the human being who owns an animal if he or she wants this animal to live a pleasant or horrific life.

There is a way out of this conundrum, though. Lawyers in several countries have started to think of ways how to change the law in favor of non-human beings. In the US, a lawsuit is being presented in the name of a chimpanzee.

Once the legal status of animals will habe been changed chances will become unequivocally better to end their misery in many prison-lie situations.

What to Do When Threats towards Companion Animals Prolong Abusive Relationships?

Photo: ALDF

Photo: ALDF

Women (and sometimes men, too) who are in an abusive relationship will stay when they do not know where to take their beloved pet. Holding the pet hostage therefore is another form of torture. And so far, there often is hardly any choice for those being abused.

“Many perpetrators of domestic violence threaten violence against companion animals as a way of exerting control over victims who are hesitant to leave their abusers without a safe solution for their pets. Because few domestic violence shelters are equipped to house companion animals, many survivors return to their abusers or delay leaving in the first place — out of concern for the safety of pets they must leave behind when seeking refuge at a women’s shelter. The PAWS Act fills this critical void by extending broader, more uniform protection for companion animals and by making sure victims of domestic violence have a safe place to go with their pets.”

Who Wants to See Animals in Tiny Cages?

Winning over the government to help protect animals in human custody is urgently needed to help avoid disaster. There are many wild animals in the hands of people who either do not have the means, the knowledge, the empathy or all of the above to care for an animal who is supposed to live in the wild.

“Next week, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will consider positive new amendments to its regulations governing the possession of big exotic cats, non-human primates, bears, wolves, and other dangerous wild animals. These amendments will close a loophole that might otherwise enable unscrupulous exhibitors to obtain an exemption from the state’s restrictions on private possession of dangerous species. They also will allow for the Department to make key, unannounced inspections at facilities that house dangerous wild animals.”

As long as people do not know what is going on behind the walls of slaughterhouses they can pretend that life is good for farm animals. Articles like this one can change this.

Good News: Soon No More Doggies in the Window

Screen Shot 2014-08-18 at 1.24.23 PM

Foreign bred puppies may no longer be imported into the United States for resale. This is a huge step into the right direction, something several animal advocacy groups have been fighting for for many years. No, this does not mean no more puppy mills yet, but there is hope that one day this animal slavery will come to an end.

“The U.S. Department of Agriculture has finalized a rule prohibiting the import of very young puppies into the United States for resale from foreign puppy mills. This is a major advance for dogs, pet parents and for animal advocates who have worked for decades to end the import of dogs bred in foreign puppy mills and sold to unsuspecting U.S. pet owners.”

Good News: No Coyote Killing Contest

Good news! It is great to see that spreading the word about some animal misery can lead to success. This time it is the end to the coyote killing contest:

“Victory! ALDF reached a settlement with the organizer of the annual JMK Coyote Hunting Contest in Harney County, Oregon. One result of the settlement is that the killing contest will not continue in future years — great news for wildlife! The event, held annually for eight seasons, required hunters to “buy in” to the contest by paying an entry fee of $100. Top teams won cash prizes totaling more than $10,000 for various kills, including ´most kills´ and ´largest kill.´”

Good News: Petitions Do Work

Photo: Robert Merrick

Signing petitions sometimes seems like a useless chore. But then again, there are results that show it is worth your while:

Jul 4, 2014 — A small, local advance on the way to real reform! The Raccoon mother and her babies who were recently killed by irresponsible trapping in Humboldt County sparked this development. They stand in for all wildlife who will no longer be trapped and killed when this contract is finally cancelled. The time of real reform for USDA-APHIS WIldlife Services has come, and in no small way, thanks to your support of this petition! Please keep sharing!

EUREKA, Calif.— One day after a broad coalition of national animal and conservation groups urged (read the letter these groups senthttp://www.biologicaldiversity.org/news/press_releases/2014/wildlife-services-06-30-2014.html) the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors to terminate its contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services, the board assented to a citizen request to delay consideration of contract renewal for at least a month in order to reevaluate the issues.”
