Nestlé Moving Towards Animal Awareness?

In a recent article in the New York Times, Nestlé is described as moving forward towards building pressure on their suppliers for more humane treatments of animals.

For some of us, this might still be a far way to animal welfare, but Nestlé, being one of the global players in the food industry, turning at least some of their attention towards the plight of animals can be seen as the success of all of those speaking up for animals.

Nestlé sells many brands using milk, so changing their attitude might make a big difference to many lives in the milk producing hellish machinery.

Pigs Would Support Punjab´s Decision

Is Punjab going to lead the way in preventing cruelty toward pigs? If only other countries would follow in the footsteps of this country´s grand decision:

“Back in June we posted on Facebook about shutting down India’s only gestation crate facility, a swine farm seeking to introduce this intensive confinement practice into the country. Sows confined in gestation crates aren’t able to turn around and often can’t lie down comfortably for months at a time. Such extreme confinement causes physical and mental suffering for these intelligent, sociable animals.

Closing the facility was a good start, but we also wanted to win broader and long-lasting protection for pigs, and we have good news to report! With further encouragement, the Government of Punjab has now issued an official direction making this type of intensive confinement an offense under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Officials in the government confirmed with us this week that their focus is now on alternatives.”

As long as people do not know what is going on behind the walls of slaughterhouses they can pretend that life is good for farm animals. Articles like this one can change this.

Are you an artist? Have you made any art, be it a sculpture, a painting, an etching, a photography, etc. depicting an animal? Would you donate it for a great cause? Then please help:

“Every year, Farm Sanctuary commemorates the Thanksgiving season with our Celebration for the Turkeys. This event, held at each of our three sanctuaries, brings together hundreds of people from across the country to enjoy a visit with our rescued turkeys, vegan delights, and presentations from expert speakers.

Guests also have the opportunity to bid on an exciting selection of original artwork, vegan products, and gift certificates in a silent auction. We are currently seeking vegan-friendly businesses and artists interested in donating items for our Celebration silent auctions. We are particularly interested in:

  • framed, animal-themed original artwork, including paintings and photography

Even Prison Is Better Than This

Bildschirmfoto 2014-07-24 um 11.55.17Bildschirmfoto 2014-07-24 um 11.55.40

Most farm animals no longer actually live on what our imagination pictures as a farm: a place with a red barn, a rooster on a heap of straw welcoming the day with his crow while the hens cackle enthusiastically, picking in the lush meadow. A pink pig rolling happily in a cool mud pond before strutting over to the trough for a delicious vegetarian meal.

No, most farm animals are confined to cages that do not let them move freely, let alone feel the sun on their bodies or roll over happily.

“Imagine being locked in a cage or crate so small you couldn’t extend your arms and legs or even turn around. How long would it be before you felt cramped, frustrated and afraid?

Hundreds of millions of pigs and billions of egg-laying hens spend their entire lives this way. Help us change that — sign our “no cages” pledge!

Petition: Wool Is For Sheep Only

Photo: Animals Australia

Photo: Animals Australia

Growing up, winters were cold and we had to wear wool sweaters. They were scratchy and itchy, and we dreaded wearing them. But they did keep us warm. Today, there are fabulous new materials out there that neither scratch nor itch but also keep the body warm and comfortable. It therefore has become so easy to live without wool – if you´re not a sheep, that is.

“As first reported by NBC, in PETA’s latest eyewitness investigations, workers killed, beat, stomped on, kicked, mutilated, and threw sheep around as they sheared them in Australia, one of the world’s top wool producers, and the U.S.

As you can see in the groundbreaking video footage, sheep shearers violently punched these gentle animals in the face, beat them, jabbed them in the head with sharp metal clippers and a hammer, and stomped and stood on their heads and necks. One shearer killed a sheep by repeatedly twisting and bending a sheep’s neck, breaking it. Workers threw scared sheep around and slammed their heads and bodies against hard wooden floors. ”
