Scarily, Fake Fur Sometimes is Bloody Real Fur

Photo: HSUS

Photo: HSUS

Sometimes, you cannot see it, feel it nor smell it: those fluffy add-ons on jackets, caps, scarves or coats could be from an animal. And sadly, the life of an animal is sometimes worth even less than the fake fur. And worse still, sometimes the whole coat, jacket or vest is the skin of an animal.

“For the second time in less than a year, Kohl’s was discovered by The Humane Society of the United States to be selling real fur as “faux.” This time, we found a raccoon dog fur-trimmed jacket advertised at Kohl’s as “faux.” With many warm and fashionable alternatives available, there’s no reason to wear animal fur and no reason for Kohl’s to sell it.”

Study in Torture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Photo: Dr. Ruth Decker

Photo: Dr. Ruth Decker

If you find the idea of taking a baby away from its mother disturbing and cruel, it is time to speak up against the proposed studies of the University of Wisconsin-Madison wants. The non-human beings are to be used because their emotionality is so similar to human beings.

“Newborn monkeys are to be forcibly separated from their mothers and kept in isolation, with nothing more than a stuffed toy to comfort them. They’ll be subjected to test after test specifically designed to cause fear–including being confronted with a live Kingsnake. They will then be killed so their brain chemicals can be measured.

There’s still time to stop this, please sign now!

This is an experiment that has been proposed at the University of Wisconsin–a study with so many questions that some scientists are demanding it be cancelled. They say the experiments will be of no measurable benefit to people, while causing tremendous suffering to highly intelligent and social animals.

Notably, according to the proposal, rhesus monkeys are the subjects of this proposed study because of their “similarity to humans in social behavior, emotion, hormonal responses and brain structure.” In other words, they suffer just like us.”

Animal Testing for Cosmetics?

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

There are more and more countries in the world who have completely stopped and banned all testing on animals for products used in cosmetics, cleaning and hygiene. Some countries have moved forward and will stop in the near future. Why are some countries not supporting this move? If more companies are told that the consumer will no longer buy products tested on animals pressure will get them to rethink their policies. And then pressure will mount on changing the legal side of this kind of torture.

“India is well on its way to becoming a cruelty-free country following its recent ban—enacted, in part, thanks to PETA India’s efforts—on testing cosmetics on animals as well as the proposed ban on importing animal-tested cosmetics into the country. Now, the Indian Beauty & Hygiene Association (IBHA)—an organization representing L’Oréal, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and other companies—is actively challenging these efforts to end animal testing.”

Has Descartes Won?

Photo:PeTA

Photo:PeTA

The philosopher René Descartes spoke of animals as being like machines, having no feelings and no souls.  So if this is what scientists believe why do they continue to use animals in tests for behaviorism? And if scientists do believe an animal has feelings why would they torture this sentient being?

“A new PETA investigation has revealed never-before-seen photos and video footage from inside a secret National Institutes of Health (NIH) laboratory.”

Good News: Soon No More Doggies in the Window

Screen Shot 2014-08-18 at 1.24.23 PM

Foreign bred puppies may no longer be imported into the United States for resale. This is a huge step into the right direction, something several animal advocacy groups have been fighting for for many years. No, this does not mean no more puppy mills yet, but there is hope that one day this animal slavery will come to an end.

“The U.S. Department of Agriculture has finalized a rule prohibiting the import of very young puppies into the United States for resale from foreign puppy mills. This is a major advance for dogs, pet parents and for animal advocates who have worked for decades to end the import of dogs bred in foreign puppy mills and sold to unsuspecting U.S. pet owners.”

Close Relationship Between Seafood and Seal Murder

Photo:HSUS

Photo:HSUS

Why is eating fish related to the yearly murder of thousands of young seals? Fishermen do not make enough money with fishing so they get offered another “job” that pays their rent, and that is killing thousands of young seals by smashing in their heads to save their precious fur for sale.

“When you purchase Canadian Seafood, you support a brutal commercial industry kept in business by the slaughter of seals. Sealers are fishermen first, and in fact only 5% of their income comes from sealing! The rest comes from exporting seafood to countries like the United States. Despite the small profit margin, the Canadian fishing industry refuses to end this bloody practice. Even Canada’s Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans won’t move to shut down seal hunting until the fishing industry asks it to.”

Dog Hoarding Is Hell on Earth

Photo: HSUS

Photo: HSUS

The Humane Society of the United States tries to act as fast as possible when asked for assistance. In the Mississippi hoarding case they came to the rescue of many animals suffering terribly, and having been in desperate need for help for days, weeks, months, maybe even longer.

When you see, hear or even smell something is wrong do get help. Hearing many dogs barking in one place could mean it is a terrific animal shelter. But it could also mean that someone is abusing dogs, letting them live in Hell on Earth.

“We’re finding dogs with fresh, open wounds and limbs that have clearly been broken for a long time. Many of them are terribly dehydrated and completely infested with fleas. But we’re here working with local law enforcement — and we’ll be here until the dogs are safely removed from this awful existence.”

Helping rescued animals also includes having the animal examined by a doctor. Not an easy task.

“We all know how scary it can be to go to the doctor, especially when you’re young and you don’t quite know what’s going on. Now imagine you’re a wild horse or burro who isn’t used to human interaction, or whose only human touch has been negative, and you can understand why it can be difficult to provide medical treatment to some of our rescued equine residents.

But, with the doors to Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch’s newly-constructed equine handling facility now open, we are able to provide care to even our most timid and semi-tame residents.

Designed by Temple Grandin and Mark Deesing, the new facility is truly an industry leader in the humane handling of equines. It has an open design, modified chutes and wider lanes that allow the horses and burros to move through the chutes in smaller groups. In addition, the facility houses state of the art equipment that allows our veterinarians to safely examine all parts of the horse, while the structure itself makes the horse feel comfortable and safe.

Just recently we treated Buckaroo, a beautiful Leopard Appaloosa gelding, who came to the ranch ten years ago after being rescued from slaughter. His previous life had left him in poor condition and with a deep mistrust of humans. The new handling facility has made a world of difference and the process of receiving his yearly check up is now much easier for him.”

Where Do You Find Your New Four-Legged Love of Your Life?

Photo: Animal Rescue Corps

Photo: Washington Animal Rescue League

Every day, there are people looking to find a new four legged family member. Some immediately turn to a shelter, some find their new love of their life through family or friends, but there still are too many who – mostly due to ignorance or naivety – buy their new dog in a store or, worse, on-line. They do not question where the dog comes from, where the breeder is, they just look for size (mostly small), breed (dogs sometimes are a fashion statement), age (the younger, the better), and price (strangely, some will pay huge amounts of money without questions asked). This is why puppy mills still thrive.

The Washington Animal Rescue League helped save some of these dogs, again:

“They Gained Their Freedom, Now Help Them Gain Their Independence

At this very moment, 21 sweet, but scared, small breed dogs are receiving refuge at the Washington Animal Rescue League. These canines were among more than 100 that were the beneficiaries of a Tennessee puppy mill bust by the Humane Society of the United States.

This is probably the first time any of these beagles, pugs and other small breed dogs have tasted a moment of freedom from the pain, trauma and illness caused by the miserable existence of a life trapped in a tiny, filthy cage.

Yes, they now have their freedom from the puppy mill, but they haven’t gained their independence from it. The adverse effects of that life still haunt these innocent creatures.”
