Animal Testing for Cosmetics?

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

There are more and more countries in the world who have completely stopped and banned all testing on animals for products used in cosmetics, cleaning and hygiene. Some countries have moved forward and will stop in the near future. Why are some countries not supporting this move? If more companies are told that the consumer will no longer buy products tested on animals pressure will get them to rethink their policies. And then pressure will mount on changing the legal side of this kind of torture.

“India is well on its way to becoming a cruelty-free country following its recent ban—enacted, in part, thanks to PETA India’s efforts—on testing cosmetics on animals as well as the proposed ban on importing animal-tested cosmetics into the country. Now, the Indian Beauty & Hygiene Association (IBHA)—an organization representing L’Oréal, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and other companies—is actively challenging these efforts to end animal testing.”

Has Descartes Won?

The philosopher René Descartes spoke of animals as being like machines, having no feelings and no souls.  So if this is what scientists believe why do they continue to use animals in tests for behaviorism? And if scientists do believe an animal has feelings why would they torture this sentient being?

“A new PETA investigation has revealed never-before-seen photos and video footage from inside a secret National Institutes of Health (NIH) laboratory.”

Awareness Changes the Lives of Snow Leopards and Humans

Photo: WWF

It is easy to point your finger at others telling them off, letting them know how much you despise what they are doing. But reaching out and introducing them to new ideas, giving them an option to change old traditions and setting examples for new ones will get you much farther – and probably faster, too.

“High in the mountains of Mongolia, Byambatsooj and seven other local herders are putting their skills and passion to good use in the face of an intensifying winter climate. These “citizen scientists” are collecting data using camera traps to help WWF study the endangered snow leopard population and conserve Asia’s High Mountains.”

How Does Education for Girls Help Chimpanzees?

Photo: Jane Goodall Institute

Photo: Jane Goodall Institute

What does education for girls have to do with the welfare of chimpanzees you might ask. If families do not have enough money to send their children to school these children will not be able to learn about environmental issues and how to preserve the forests in which the chimpanzees live. Some families might have some money and will then decide to send one child to school. Very rarely will this be a girl if she has a brother. This often leads to something fascinating when and if these girls get a chance to learn: they thrive, they learn with extra ambition, and empathize with those who have little chance of survival.

The Jane Goodall Institute helps the communities surrounding the projects:

“JGI’s Girl’s Scholarship Project

In many rural communities throughout Africa, girls must take a back seat to boys when it comes to education.

Due to limited economic resources, families often have to choose which of their children are sent to school and who will stay to help the household. In the vast majority of these cases, boys are selected to attend school while girls end up remaining in the home. Many of these girls are encouraged to marry early and start a family, further decreasing their chances of getting an education.

To address this issue, the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) launched our Girl’s Scholarship Project in 1998 to provide girls and young women with the resources they need to attend school. This project is aimed at decreasing the disparity of education levels between males and females in the Kigoma community of western Tanzania.

The girls who receive scholarships from JGI are all part of JGI’s Roots & Shoots program, the Institute’s global youth environmental and humanitarian program. In addition to helping these girls attend school, JGI also trains their families on sustainable farming techniques and what they can do to preserve the forests around them.”
