Good News: NIH Will Stop Torture of Monkeys

Several petitions concerning the abhorrent abuse of baby monkeys were available all through this year. PeTA had brought to light the continued cruelty towards baby monkeys who were taken away from their mothers for experimentation. These studies had been going on for decades with no new information being found during the last decade.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have declared an end to these atrocious experiments, this news being confirmed by congressman Brendan Boyle.

PeTA is now discussing with the NIH when and where the monkeys will be released and retired.

You can read more and sign the petition on retiring the monkeys here:

Are Animals Plants?

Photo: IDA

Photo: IDA

At first, this sounds like a pleasant idea: encouraging people to use their garden to grow their own supply of food. For a plant-based diet this could be terrific. But what will happen if you let everybody raise their chickens, turkeys, geese, or even bigger animals in their back yard?

“Please help IDA support vegan author and activist Colleen Patrick-Goudreau to stop backyard slaughter in Oakland, California. Tell the Oakland City Council that animals are not plants. Ask them to reject the proposal on urban agriculture that classifies animals as plants by including them under “Community Gardens.” This proposal would allow people to raise “livestock” in the city without needing a Conditional Use Permit. “If this passes, it will have negative impacts on thousands of animals for decades to come,” says Goudreau. She encourages everyone in Oakland to get involved to stop the slaughter and cruelty before it begins.

Backyard Slaughter means:

  • Neglected or abandoned “livestock” will be dumped at the local shelter leading to more dogs and cats being euthanized.
  • The city has a responsibility to promote the consumption of more plant foods versus animal foods with the rise of heart disease, Type 2 Diabetes, and obesity.
  • Animal agriculture includes the sights, sounds, and smells of unregulated slaughter, which impacts the safety and well-being of neighbors.
  • Wildlife will be attracted to the area, increasing human-wildlife conflicts.”

Good News: Wyoming Wolves Protected Under The Endangered Species Act

Photo: Jess Lee

It is wonderful to share some good news:

“A federal judge ruled that Wyoming wolves must once again be protected under the Endangered Species Act.

Today, it is no longer legal in Wyoming to shoot wolves on sight, chase them down with vehicles, or gas wolf pups in their dens—all of which were permissible under Wyoming’s flawed wolf management scheme.”

Study in Torture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Photo: Dr. Ruth Decker

Photo: Dr. Ruth Decker

If you find the idea of taking a baby away from its mother disturbing and cruel, it is time to speak up against the proposed studies of the University of Wisconsin-Madison wants. The non-human beings are to be used because their emotionality is so similar to human beings.

“Newborn monkeys are to be forcibly separated from their mothers and kept in isolation, with nothing more than a stuffed toy to comfort them. They’ll be subjected to test after test specifically designed to cause fear–including being confronted with a live Kingsnake. They will then be killed so their brain chemicals can be measured.

There’s still time to stop this, please sign now!

This is an experiment that has been proposed at the University of Wisconsin–a study with so many questions that some scientists are demanding it be cancelled. They say the experiments will be of no measurable benefit to people, while causing tremendous suffering to highly intelligent and social animals.

Notably, according to the proposal, rhesus monkeys are the subjects of this proposed study because of their “similarity to humans in social behavior, emotion, hormonal responses and brain structure.” In other words, they suffer just like us.”

Save the Date for Elephants and Rhinos: October 4th, 2014

Bildschirmfoto 2014-09-22 um 09.09.57

Traditionally, October 4th is World Animal Day. For over 80 years, this day has been marked as the day to spread the word on animal awareness. There will be many events, here is one spread out over all continents:

In Defense of Animals is organizing a March for Elephants and Rhinos:

“In Africa, four elephants are illegally killed for their ivory every hour with only 300,000 to 500,000 alive today. Every nine hours a rhino is killed for his/her horn and it’s estimated that fewer than 22,000 African rhino now remain. In South Africa, more lions survive now in captivity, where they are bred for petting zoos and canned hunts, than roam in the wild. Poaching helps to support terrorist activities and is contributing to the destabilization of Africa – killing humans and animals. This tragic state of the world’s iconic animals will soon lead to their extinction, unless we collectively come together to reverse the current trend.”

Animal Testing for Cosmetics?

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

There are more and more countries in the world who have completely stopped and banned all testing on animals for products used in cosmetics, cleaning and hygiene. Some countries have moved forward and will stop in the near future. Why are some countries not supporting this move? If more companies are told that the consumer will no longer buy products tested on animals pressure will get them to rethink their policies. And then pressure will mount on changing the legal side of this kind of torture.

“India is well on its way to becoming a cruelty-free country following its recent ban—enacted, in part, thanks to PETA India’s efforts—on testing cosmetics on animals as well as the proposed ban on importing animal-tested cosmetics into the country. Now, the Indian Beauty & Hygiene Association (IBHA)—an organization representing L’Oréal, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and other companies—is actively challenging these efforts to end animal testing.”

Have an Elephant and Ivory, too?

Photo: CITES

Photo: CITES

Oh, these poor hunters! Banning ivory has made them anxious on how they can keep their weapons since many have ivory inlays. So they come running to those senators who support hunting and who like to kill themselves.

“Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), whose endorsements include the National Rifle Association, has introduced a bill (The Lawful Ivory Protection Act of 2014; S. 2587/H.R. 5052) to prevent the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) from implementing much needed regulations in the U.S. to combat elephant ivory trafficking.

This bill is wrong at a time when nearly 100 elephants are brutally killed by poachers every single day.

Senator Alexander, with the support from Congressman Steve Daines (R-MT), claim to be concerned about the new rules impacting any owners of “legal” ivory, however the FWS’s new rules allow for the possession of legally owned ivory, so in reality, their concern is for gun owners and “sportsmen,” whose guns and rifles, knives, and weapon cleaning equipment often contain ivory from killed elephants and for elephant trophy hunters.”

Petition: No Hunters in Wildlife Refuge

Photo: In Defense of Animals

Photo: In Defense of Animals

There you are planning a summer trip for your family, looking for great places to enjoy nature and let your children see wildlife in their natural habitat. And then comes the sad awakening: you see hunters wandering through the “refuge” looking for one “great shot”. What do you do? Speak up:

“Wildlife refuges are far from the safe haven the name would imply. In reality, the majority of the 561 publicly owned US wildlife refuges allow hunting and fishing – some even allow trapping. The San Diego National Wildlife Refuge is one of the few remaining refuges where hunting is not allowed. However, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), which manages refuges, wants to change that and has proposed opening up part of the Otay Mesa and Lakes area inside the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge to allow hunting of wildlife, including deer, rabbits, and birds such as doves, quails, and wild turkeys, in addition to implementing a feral pig monitoring and eradication plan, despite the fact that no feral pigs have been sighted on the Refuge. These horrific activities would be executed if the USFWS’s “Alternative D” plan is implemented.”
