Does a University Need an Elephant?

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

Many universities have traditions, most of them are fun for all. But having an elephant walk for a university? Together with the advancement of knowledge the advancement of learning should be proven here. Let the students be creative and start a new tradition – without cruelty towards other beings.

“Despite learning of the cruelty and abuse endured by elephants who are exploited for publicity stunts, Texas A&M University is moving forward with plans to maintain its archaic tradition of hosting live elephants as part of its annual Elephant Walk, an event designed to pay homage to exiting seniors. Join PETA in urging Texas A&M to wake up to the age of compassion for others!

There is no excuse for an institution of higher education to be promoting cruelty, especially among this generation of compassionate and socially aware students. Speak up for exploited elephants TODAY and ask Texas A&M to be true to its core values by compassionately carrying on its tradition without the use of a live elephant.”

Make More Noise for Nosey

Please speak up for Nosey, the tortured elephant, thank you!

A fun weekend lies ahead of many families: fall fairs are on in abundance, parents will take their children to the rides, let them have cotton candy, stroll around over the fair grounds, and … see animals being abused? Yes, there are still people who have not heard about the forms of torture used to make animals perform unwillingly in front of humans.

“Nosey the elephant is scheduled to be in Indiana this week, where she will be forced to perform with the Great American Family Circus and give rides at the Kewanna Fall Festival from September 26 through 28, despite the fact that recent video footage shows that she is in pain. Nosey needs you to speak up for her! Please urge festival organizers to cancel Nosey’s appearances immediately and to pledge never to host elephant acts again.”

From Bliss Back to Abuse?

Photo: Wildlife SOS

Photo: Wildlife SOS

First, there is the good news of an animal being saved after over 50 years of abuse and torture. Not everyone agrees with anthropomorphous ways of thinking, but it is most certain that an animal freed will delight in this newly found freedom.

But going back to the ordeal is probably the worst kind of abuse.

“We rescued Raju after he spent approximately 50 years chained up, beaten, and help captive by beggars in India. His rescue story went viral online because this abused elephant was crying tears of joy when he was finally set free in a loving environment at our elephant sanctuary.

At the time of his rescue he was near death. He was emaciated, dehydrated and exhausted. Despite his frailness, he was forced to beg on the streets and was being kept in spiked chains.

Now the cruel person who had illegal custody of him is trying to get him back through the Allahabad court. You helped free him once by supporting Wildlife SOS campaigns and our sanctuaries.”

Make Noise for Nosey

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

This elephant has been mistreated, abused, tortured, and tormented for the most part of his life. It is time to stop this, please help.

“For Nosey the elephant, every step must be excruciating. Week after week, Nosey’s exhibitor Hugo Liebel has forced her to give rides, even though she is likely suffering from arthritis and is clearly in pain. According to a board-certified zoo veterinarian and elephant expert, Nosey’s case is “the worst, most prolonged, documented example of an uncorrected case of suffering and abuse in an elephant I have ever reviewed.”

Is It Social to Watch Tortured Animals?

Photo: PeTA

When circuses send animals into the arena, these animals are not there for their own pleasure or fun and would never willingly do what they are forced to do. More and more former employees of circuses have started speaking up, telling horrifying stories about how animals are tortured to perform.

Ringling Brothers is no exception. Bullhooks are just one instrument for hurting elephants being used over and over again.

If you want to be entertained go see Cirque du Soleil or some other circus where you can be awed by the extraordinary performance of beautiful people.

“According to former circus employees, Ringling trainers routinely beat elephants and jab them with sharp metal bullhooks in order to force them to perform. At least 30 elephants, including four babies, have died since 1992, including an 8-month-old baby elephant named Riccardo who was euthanized after he fractured his hind legs when he fell from a circus pedestal.”

Petition: Elephants Do Not Belong In Circuses

Photo: PeTA

The more people speak up against animals in circuses the more circuses will get it: there is no high quality entertainment that involves inhumane treatment of any beings.

“Karnak Shriners have chosen exhibitor Tarzan Zerbini to provide and exhibit elephants for their circus, which plans to travel throughout Quebec beginning August 14. Please join PETA in urging the Karnak Shriners to require that Zerbini stage its performances without elephants.”

Petition: No Wild Animal Belongs into Any Circus

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

Whenever there is news about a circus the first thing you should look for is whether of not there are any animals involved. Nowadays, there are some outstanding circuses with not a single being involved but human beings. And for the most part, they hopefully get to choose why they are there in the first place.

But if there are animals involved, never go. Tell your friends, neighbors, colleagues, simply everbody to not support this animal cruelty.

Twenty years after hosting an event that resulted in one of the biggest circus tragedies of all time, the Neal S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu plans to open its doors to wild animal acts again by hosting the Moscow International Circus in October. On that devastating day in 1994, Tyke, an African elephant, fled from the arena after killing one person and seriously injuring another, then frantically ran through the streets of Honolulu, injuring 12 bystanders before ultimately being shot to death with 86 bullets. While the circus is leaving elephants out of its show, other wild animals—including big cats—will be used. Captive big cats kill an average of one person every year and injure 10 more. Even the best, most experienced handler cannot predict a wild animal’s behavior. The use of big cats in circus acts is not only dangerous but also cruel. Lions and tigers endure just as much abuse in captivity as elephants do. They don’t naturally jump through fiery hoops or balance on their hind legs. Instead, they are beaten into submission and forced under the threat of punishment to perform these unnatural and confusing tricks. Whips, tight collars, muzzles, and sedation are often used to control the animals, and they are punched, kicked, whipped, and screamed at when deemed “uncooperative.” When these intelligent, frustrated animals rebel against the abuse, they attack trainers and sometimes lash out at bystanders, which the Blaisdell Center witnessed when abused and frightened Tyke fought back.”

When Does the Transition Happen From Holding a Toy Teddy Bear Lovingly To Your Heart to Torturing the Animal Who Looks Just Like This?

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

Bears have been mistreated probably since the moment humans were able to capture them. There is no horrific torture humans have come up with that has not been performed on bears.

People grow up holding a cuddly toy teddy bear in their arms. But some time later some humans change into bear haters.

“Bears, who have natural ranges of up to thousands of miles in the wild, are being kept in cramped cages and concrete pits at deplorable roadside facilities across the country that exhibit the animals for profit while disregarding their most basic needs. Many bears at roadside zoos spend most of their waking hours pacing, head-butting the cages, and engaging in other abnormal behavior that is indicative of suffering—all because the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has disregarded the space, enrichment, dietary, and behavioral needs of captive bears, who recent studies show are just as complex and intelligent as primates.

We need your help to make sure that the USDA enacts stronger regulations for captive bears without further delay—take action now!”

Petition: Give the Elephants a Law to Protect Them

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

The more people care about the plight of circus animals, the more politicians start to react. Getting laws to support legal action against any kind of animal cruelty is the best way to start to successfully eradicate abuse.

“Animal advocates across the country are making their voices heard the week of July 21 through 25 in a week of action, and each voice counts as we encourage Congress to support H.R. 4525, the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act (TEAPA).

TEAPA was introduced by U.S. Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), who has expressed concern over the detrimental effects of traveling circuses on animal welfare, stating, “The mounting evidence of inhumane treatment and the growing public concern for these animals demands that we reconsider what are appropriate living conditions for these intelligent, social creatures.”

If passed, exhibiting any exotic or wild animal who has been transported within the prior 15 days would be prohibited, meaning that traveling exotic and wild animal acts would be effectively banned. Animals used in circuses and other traveling acts endure severe physical and psychological abuse as they are carted across the country in poorly ventilated trailers and boxcars—while bound in tight chains or confined to cages barely large enough for their bodies—for up to 50 weeks every year.

This bill is a glimmer of hope for exotic and wild animals who are suffering in circuses and other traveling acts, and every voice counts! Please join PETA today by asking your representative to support and co-sponsor the Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act (H.R. 4525) and help put an end to the suffering. ”

Petition: Animals Do Not Want to Dance For People

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

Yes, there still are families who believe their children need to see an elephant dancing on two legs, being made to do that with torture instruments in the hands of those pretending to care for the animal. Or tigers balancing on high seats while the trainers hits them around, pretending this would not hurt.

How Circuses Hurt Animals

This week, Mexico City made a landmark decision to ban animal circuses. If you haven’t seen what happens to animals who are used in circuses, check out our new video list, 7 Videos the Circus Doesn’t Want You to See. What is billed as harmless entertainment actually means a lifetime of misery for the animals. If you want to make a difference, please urge LivingSocial to end its promotion of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.”
