What Is the Difference between a Dog Farm and a Hog Farm?

The only difference

If you ever have attended a western-style barbecue you will most certainly have seen a pig being roasted over a fire. And if you have traveled through some parts of Asia you might have come across a dog on a spike being roasted over a fire pit.

If you go shopping through almost any super market in the western hemisphere you will come across rows and rows of products made from animals such as pigs, cows, sheep, chickens, turkeys, and maybe some rabbits, too. They will hardly ever still be recognizable as coming from any of these beings, because how would you cook a whole cow? Even a rabbit still wearing her fur coat seems to be unappealing to the appetite of someone who would most happily chew on a part of her. There also might be different varieties of animals from the sea, some fish will be lying on ice, others have been cut into smaller pieces so that you no longer know who was chopped up into easily cookable portions. And you might see tanks with live animals like lobsters and other sea creatures.

In many Asian markets and food stores, you will see a different variety of foods, including different animals displayed either in bits and pieces or as a whole for human consumption. If you have ever walked over a farmer’s market in different parts of the world you will certainly have come across whole chickens hanging – either still alive or having been killed recently – from wooden beams. There will be goats and sheep cut open, their intestines removed, but otherwise still easily recognizable as the animals that would have walked to the market with the farmer. There will be cages with chickens, birds, and, depending where in the world you are, maybe with monkeys, maybe with dogs.

More and more stories have come up recently showing us pictures of dog farms in Korea. And of these farms being raided by animal rights organizations, taking the dogs and rescuing them from being slaughtered for human consumption. What would a farmer in Iowa, North Carolina, Germany, China, or Russia say, if a group of people would rescue their pigs and cows from the slaughterhouse? If this group of people would say that the way they have been treating these animals in their care is inhumane and therefore these beings need to be rescued? If these people would say that it is inhumane to eat such a being because it is a sentient being?

Humane education is one of the most important parts in raising awareness, in leading a path away from inhumane traditions, in bringing insight into the plight of millions of animals. Pointing with fingers at those who do something differently will probably not lead to a change of thinking. But giving someone the possibility to look at the picture from another angle, and giving someone the chance to decide on their own how to change their ways will most likely lead to a willful readiness in change. And this will not only save those  sentient beings stuck in that cage in this moment but to less cages in the future.

Putting on Pressure Helps; One Company More Pledges to Go Cage-Free

Factory farming has led to some of the cruelest forms of animal abuse. Thanks to rising awareness and continuous animal advocacy another company has decided that moving away from cruelty towards animals is a win-win deal. The fast-food chain Wendy’s has pledged to stop buying eggs from caged hens, thereby following Panera Bread, Taco Bell and other food-providing companies.

This shows that petitions can lead to change, and that the voices of those speaking out against animal abuse are being heard.

When Walmart Speaks Up Many Listen

Mercy for Animals

Mercy for Animals

2015-05-27a

Did you know that Walmart sells around 25 % of all food in the United States? A company with such a huge market share definitely has enormous influence on those that produce the food they sell. So when Walmart announced it would encourage their suppliers to give animals more space, to discourage the use of antibiotics, to use pain killers for all painful procedures, this truly is a step in the right direction.

It will not be possible to end all the inhumane actions against animals in one step, but this news gives hope that especially in the food industry there will be a change of thought – leading to a change in action.

How Is a Chicken Turned into Meat? By Torture

Mercy for Animals

Mercy for Animals

Many people love to eat chicken. But would they enjoy seeing what the chickens had to go through before landing on their plate? Probably not. As long as there are meat eaters there will be factories processing live animals. But do these animals need to suffer before being killed? No. But the animals need help to protect them from all the cruelty.

“In the last few weeks, both The New York Times (http://bit.ly/GFSNYTKristof) and USA Today (http://bit.ly/GFSUSAToday), two of the largest newspapers in the country, have slammed the horrific cruelty to chickens our undercover video exposed at a Gordon Food Service supplier. USA Today has even stated that “there’s a big space between what’s legal and what’s right” and that “none of this is necessary.” Over 100,000 of you who signed this petition agree!

Could you take a minute today to call Gordon Food Service’s headquarters? Please call Gordon Food Service at 800-968-4164 and demand that the company stop torturing chickens, ask for CEO Jim Gordon, and leave a polite voice mail telling him that you want chickens to suffer less and Gordon Food Service to implement a meaningful animal welfare policy. You can also email jim.gordon@gfs.com and info@gfs.com

Please help by making a phone call, sharing the information, spreading the word.

Study in Torture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Photo: Dr. Ruth Decker

Photo: Dr. Ruth Decker

If you find the idea of taking a baby away from its mother disturbing and cruel, it is time to speak up against the proposed studies of the University of Wisconsin-Madison wants. The non-human beings are to be used because their emotionality is so similar to human beings.

“Newborn monkeys are to be forcibly separated from their mothers and kept in isolation, with nothing more than a stuffed toy to comfort them. They’ll be subjected to test after test specifically designed to cause fear–including being confronted with a live Kingsnake. They will then be killed so their brain chemicals can be measured.

There’s still time to stop this, please sign now!

This is an experiment that has been proposed at the University of Wisconsin–a study with so many questions that some scientists are demanding it be cancelled. They say the experiments will be of no measurable benefit to people, while causing tremendous suffering to highly intelligent and social animals.

Notably, according to the proposal, rhesus monkeys are the subjects of this proposed study because of their “similarity to humans in social behavior, emotion, hormonal responses and brain structure.” In other words, they suffer just like us.”

Animal Testing for Cosmetics?

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

There are more and more countries in the world who have completely stopped and banned all testing on animals for products used in cosmetics, cleaning and hygiene. Some countries have moved forward and will stop in the near future. Why are some countries not supporting this move? If more companies are told that the consumer will no longer buy products tested on animals pressure will get them to rethink their policies. And then pressure will mount on changing the legal side of this kind of torture.

“India is well on its way to becoming a cruelty-free country following its recent ban—enacted, in part, thanks to PETA India’s efforts—on testing cosmetics on animals as well as the proposed ban on importing animal-tested cosmetics into the country. Now, the Indian Beauty & Hygiene Association (IBHA)—an organization representing L’Oréal, Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and other companies—is actively challenging these efforts to end animal testing.”

Turkey Turture – not only on Thanksgiving

turkey chick

images-1

Every day people believe eating lean meat will help them stay healthy. Where to find lean meat? Turkeys, of course.
So there are farms that produce turkeys. There, turkeys are only “things”, things that give meat.
Here is a report on what happens behind the walls of such a turkey torture place:

“From the day they hatch until they are violently killed, the lives of Butterball turkeys are filled with misery and deprivation.

How do I know? Because I worked undercover at a Butterball turkey hatchery in North Carolina on behalf of Mercy For Animals — a national animal protection charity. At Butterball, I used a hidden camera to document horrors that few people could even imagine, including:

• Baby birds being callously tossed into a macerating machine to be ground up alive

• Workers roughly throwing and dropping newborn animals with no regard for their welfare

• Newly hatched birds regularly getting stuck in and mangled by factory machinery

• Turkeys having their sensitive toes and beaks cut or burned off without any painkillers

Unfortunately, these abuses are merely a sample of the ongoing cruelty and violence that turkeys are forced to endure at Butterball. Previous investigations by Mercy For Animals have exposed Butterball workers violently kicking and throwing turkeys, and bashing in their heads with metal pipes. One such investigation led to a raid of the Butterball factory farm by law enforcement and resulted in multiple criminal cruelty to animals convictions of Butterball workers, including the first-ever felony cruelty conviction related to factory-farmed poultry in U.S. history.

On top of all of this horrific violence, Butterball’s turkeys endure selective breeding to grow so large, so quickly, that many of them suffer from painful bone defects, hip joint lesions, crippling foot and leg deformities, and fatal heart attacks.”
