Success for Nosey, the Elephant!

One of my first blog posts was about Nosey, the elephant. Today, four years later, I am grateful and immensely happy to share with you that this one elephant is finally in a safe  sanctuary, will never be exploited again.

Many, many people worked together for this happy ending – hopefully it will be the beginning of the end of animal exploitation in entertainment.

“23. JAN. 2018 — A Lawrence County, Alabama judge has ruled today that Nosey the elephant will be able to stay in true sanctuary at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. A case against Nosey’s notorious owners, the Liebel Family Circus, was heard on December 15, 2017, and Judge Angela Terry has ruled that Nosey will remain at the Sanctuary PERMANENTLY!

SAVE NOSEY NOW has worked since 2013 for this day, chasing this small family circus from town to town all over the country, never giving up on Nosey for one day. We pushed hard at the USDA who was charged with upholding the Animal Welfare Act by promoting call-in actions, tweetstorms, letter writing campaigns, and a formal march on their Washington, DC site in June 2015. We also dug deep into the patterns of abuse by this small family circus and pushed hard against the Florida Wildlife Commission who repeatedly rubberstamped the permit for this abusive family to keep and use Nosey. Our work involved research into many state and city animal laws as Nosey was hauled around the country from state to state, city to city, day to day, month to month, year to year. We were successful in shutting down venues in many locations as the entities were educated about the true life of Nosey the elephant.

We have run into many obstacles along the way to Nosey’s freedom, but the powers aligned in the little town of Moulton, Alabama on a fateful day in November, 2017 where Nosey was spotted by some very brave local women. These women saw a wrong and decided to fix it. Googling Nosey, Save Nosey Now was found, and we were able to provide assistance to the local officials throughout the proceedings with documents, pictures and videos to strengthen the case against the circus owners. Contacting the law enforcement division of PETA, more resources were on the way to Alabama. Save Nosey Now was pleased to be a part of the bench trial in Lawrence County, Alabama, and to provide assistance wherever needed.

We thank the good people of Alabama for their perseverance and follow through. We thank our supporters who have always believed that this day would come for Nosey, and we thank all the other organizations who worked hard for Nosey for many years.”

Elephants Performing – Help This Become a Thing of the Past

Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle—a “luxury camp” in Thailand—continues to force elephants to give rides and play polo, despite claiming to give refuge to endangered Asian elephants. Offering these rides sends a dangerous message to tourists and drives demand for an abusive industry that controls animals through violence and domination. Dozens of travel companies have committed to not offering rides, and as a result of the public’s “mood shift” against the use of animals for entertainment, Ringling Bros. circus has shut down after 146 years. It’s well past time that Four Seasons ended rides and all other direct-contact activities with elephants.

Good News: TripAdvisor Will Stop Selling Tickets to Some of the Cruelest Tourist Activities

There was a time when it was believed that dolphins enjoyed swimming with humans. That might have been true when the animals were able to swim with someone by choice but being held captive to perform this kind of action is cruel and inhumane.

There also might have been a time when elephants would have helped a human by letting this person sit on their back. But being forced to carry tourists around has nothing to do with choice or pleasure or freedom.

And to believe that baby tigers would willingly leave their mothers to sit on a tourist’s lap is either very naive or worse.

Trip Advisor has listened. The company will stop supporting this kind of cruelty.

A Camera Can Be as Deadly as a Gun

Friends just returned from a trip to Thailand, sending me a picture of them with two tigers. They unknowingly had been lured into a typical tourist trap. The tigers were being held in a place that claimed to be a “sanctuary”, but in reality cubs of many different species are torn from their mothers, confined into tiny cages and only taken out for photo sessions with tourists. Once they grow too old or become too dangerous to handle, “acting up” despite severe punishment they are sent off to farms for canned hunting.

“Do you remember Cecil, the beloved lion who was illegally lured from a Zimbabwe park and painfully killed with a bow and arrow last summer? Unfortunately, despite the public outrage of this sad and very unnecessary death, thousands of other lions continue to suffer at the hands of the tourism industry today.

World Animal Protection has investigated the lives of captive lions in Africa and were appalled by what we found. We are desperately trying to help these lions, but they need your help too.

What We Found

Lion cubs bred in captivity are ripped from their mothers at less than a month old. At just a few weeks old, cubs will begin to be handled by tourists for pictures, often roughly, causing them chronic stress and sometimes injury. Any aggressive behavior they display is punished using fear and pain. Tourists are even instructed to hit the lions if they act unruly. When they are not being handled, they are kept in small concrete enclosures and fed inadequately.

As the cubs grow into lions, they will become too dangerous for these tourist parks. No longer profitable as toys for tourists, the lions might be euthanized or sold to farms for “canned hunting.” Canned hunting uses whatever means necessary to ensure a kill, including drugging the lions or luring them with meat. The area is enclosed so the lions cannot escape. They do not stand a chance at survival.”

Sadly, this happens all around the world, with tigers, lions, almost any wild animal.

Please never pay for having a picture taken with a wild animal. Never ride an animal, be it donkey or elephant.

If you want to visit an animal sanctuary, ask people who know where to find a legitimate one, most animal welfare organizations will be able to point you into the right direction. Tell your family, tell you friends.

Actors in Action for Nosey

This could mean a breakthrough for reaching the goal of getting Nosey to an elephant sanctuary.  This elephant has been held  by someone not interested in her well being for many years, ignoring her ailments, her pain, her natural needs. Though obviously affected by arthritis, Nosey is continually dragged around the United States to roadside flea markets and has to give rides to ignorant people. Now that the actress Kim Basinger has taken up the cause there might be help for Nosey.

“CEI, AFNN, and SNN, have been working secretly for the last 5 months on behalf of our beloved Nosey, and today we can finally let you in on what we’ve been doing.
Nosey’s Storybook has been on quite an adventure lately, and it eventually found its way to Academy Award-winning actress, Kim Basinger, who today mailed Nosey’s book, a personal letter, and a list of organizations supporting her efforts, to former president, Bill Clinton. Kim is asking Bill Clinton to contact the USDA’s chief, Tom Vilsack, and request the USDA have Nosey re-examined. This may also include the participation of the Clinton Global Initiative, as well as Chelsea Clinton, who has a passion for elephants, and has campaigned for the ending of the illegal ivory trade, so we are very excited that Kim has made this decision to write to him and ask for his help!
There are many people and organizations I would like to thank, and I’ll start with our director, Richard Isley, who was CEI’s contact person for Kim Basinger and her manager, Hollywood producer, Oren Segal, at Radius Entertainment in Los Angeles. What started off as an offer by KIm to hold a fund-raiser for Nosey, which would have required Richard to travel to Florida, and negotiate the possible selling of Nosey with the Liebel family, evolved into Kim’s decision to write to Bill Clinton after Richard expressed his concern that Hugo Liebel would most likely refuse any offer, just as he had previously done with Hollywood mogul, and co-creator of The Simpson’s, the late Sam Simon, who reportedly offered $750,000 for Nosey. Kim then made the decision to write a letter to Bill Clinton, asking him to help Nosey.
We hope this news gives you optimism for Nosey’s future, and please thank Kim Basinger for her participation!! CEI fully believes that she will be successful in her efforts for Nosey.
And Kim’s new Warner Bros. movie, “The Nice Guys,” will be released on May 20, 2016, and also stars Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.
And I would like to thank all of you for your difficult and heart-breaking work on behalf of Nosey. It has been a very long road for her, but now she has some new friends in high places. And so do we!

When first becoming aware of the plight of elephants in general being exploited it seemed plausible to end their plight due to several issues. First of all, elephants are big and heavy. Second of all, they literally need tons of food. and third of all, they can easily hurt and even kill (intentionally of accidentally) a human being. But sadly, it turned out – as with many animal related issues – that greed and ignorance have turned this battle in an uphill one just like many others.

Nosey the Elephant has been touring the United States for many years. Her owner makes her give rides no matter her physical state. She has been seen with sores on her sides, with wounds on her legs, swaying back and forth in distress. But as long as there are people willing to pay and thereby giving the owner reason to keep her, chances are slim she will be released to an elephant sanctuary, even though the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee has agreed to take her in.

A small group has been fighting for Nosey’s release to this sanctuary diligently. They have  been busy keeping track of Nosey’s whereabouts, have tried to inform people at the sights about the sad physical and psychological state Nosey is in, have tried to get her released, but until today to no avail.

Please spread the news, let friends and family know that paying for rides on any animal’s back is simply no fun for the animal at best, and often painful and crippling for these beings.
