Selling Something Is not the Animal’s Job

When animals are used in commercials they are supposed to sell the product. And this usually works quite well, otherwise the industry would have stopped this many years ago. But people are becoming more and more critical to this use (and often abuse) of other beings. So here is some good news:

“After more than 51,000 supporters wrote to GEICO with complaints about its recent commercial featuring a chimpanzee “actor,” the company has promised never again to feature chimpanzees and other great apes in its commercials! Moreover, the ad agency that created the commercial, The Martin Agency, has pledged to leave chimpanzees and all other great apes out of its future campaigns. With this compassionate decision, The Martin Agency joins a growing list of top ad agencies—including BBDO, Grey Group, TBWA, McCann Erickson, J. Walter Thompson, and Y&R—that have also agreed not to use great apes in ad campaigns.”

This is welcome news, long overdue. Let’s hope the US will follow suit and the rest of the world will catch up. I long for the day when ALL animal testing is history.

The European Union is scheduled to ban all animal-tested products next month, but the rest of the world hasn’t followed suit. This is a landmark moment for animal rights’ activists.

It’s common knowledge that much of the cosmetic and personal care industry tests products on animals. Despite advances in technology, animal experiments are still particularly cruel—and surprisingly ineffective in determining a product’s safety. That’s why the European Union recently announced that after years of delays, it’s finally banning the import and sale of all animal-tested products and ingredients, starting March 11.

Actors in Action for Nosey

This could mean a breakthrough for reaching the goal of getting Nosey to an elephant sanctuary.  This elephant has been held  by someone not interested in her well being for many years, ignoring her ailments, her pain, her natural needs. Though obviously affected by arthritis, Nosey is continually dragged around the United States to roadside flea markets and has to give rides to ignorant people. Now that the actress Kim Basinger has taken up the cause there might be help for Nosey.

“CEI, AFNN, and SNN, have been working secretly for the last 5 months on behalf of our beloved Nosey, and today we can finally let you in on what we’ve been doing.
Nosey’s Storybook has been on quite an adventure lately, and it eventually found its way to Academy Award-winning actress, Kim Basinger, who today mailed Nosey’s book, a personal letter, and a list of organizations supporting her efforts, to former president, Bill Clinton. Kim is asking Bill Clinton to contact the USDA’s chief, Tom Vilsack, and request the USDA have Nosey re-examined. This may also include the participation of the Clinton Global Initiative, as well as Chelsea Clinton, who has a passion for elephants, and has campaigned for the ending of the illegal ivory trade, so we are very excited that Kim has made this decision to write to him and ask for his help!
There are many people and organizations I would like to thank, and I’ll start with our director, Richard Isley, who was CEI’s contact person for Kim Basinger and her manager, Hollywood producer, Oren Segal, at Radius Entertainment in Los Angeles. What started off as an offer by KIm to hold a fund-raiser for Nosey, which would have required Richard to travel to Florida, and negotiate the possible selling of Nosey with the Liebel family, evolved into Kim’s decision to write to Bill Clinton after Richard expressed his concern that Hugo Liebel would most likely refuse any offer, just as he had previously done with Hollywood mogul, and co-creator of The Simpson’s, the late Sam Simon, who reportedly offered $750,000 for Nosey. Kim then made the decision to write a letter to Bill Clinton, asking him to help Nosey.
We hope this news gives you optimism for Nosey’s future, and please thank Kim Basinger for her participation!! CEI fully believes that she will be successful in her efforts for Nosey.
And Kim’s new Warner Bros. movie, “The Nice Guys,” will be released on May 20, 2016, and also stars Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.
And I would like to thank all of you for your difficult and heart-breaking work on behalf of Nosey. It has been a very long road for her, but now she has some new friends in high places. And so do we!

When first becoming aware of the plight of elephants in general being exploited it seemed plausible to end their plight due to several issues. First of all, elephants are big and heavy. Second of all, they literally need tons of food. and third of all, they can easily hurt and even kill (intentionally of accidentally) a human being. But sadly, it turned out – as with many animal related issues – that greed and ignorance have turned this battle in an uphill one just like many others.

Nosey the Elephant has been touring the United States for many years. Her owner makes her give rides no matter her physical state. She has been seen with sores on her sides, with wounds on her legs, swaying back and forth in distress. But as long as there are people willing to pay and thereby giving the owner reason to keep her, chances are slim she will be released to an elephant sanctuary, even though the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee has agreed to take her in.

A small group has been fighting for Nosey’s release to this sanctuary diligently. They have  been busy keeping track of Nosey’s whereabouts, have tried to inform people at the sights about the sad physical and psychological state Nosey is in, have tried to get her released, but until today to no avail.

Please spread the news, let friends and family know that paying for rides on any animal’s back is simply no fun for the animal at best, and often painful and crippling for these beings.

Elephants: Their Ability to Memorize

“To have a memory like an elephant” is a saying you can find in many languages. And it is not something new, either. So even though we know that the ability to remember is so great in elephants they are being abused on a daily basis. One of the main goals of two Facebook groups is the rescue of Nosey, the elephant who has been and still is being abused by the owner. There is an elephant sanctuary ready and prepared to take this elephant in – any time, any moment. Please share the sad story that will hopefully lead to a happy ending in 2016:

Good News: NIH Will Stop Torture of Monkeys

Several petitions concerning the abhorrent abuse of baby monkeys were available all through this year. PeTA had brought to light the continued cruelty towards baby monkeys who were taken away from their mothers for experimentation. These studies had been going on for decades with no new information being found during the last decade.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have declared an end to these atrocious experiments, this news being confirmed by congressman Brendan Boyle.

PeTA is now discussing with the NIH when and where the monkeys will be released and retired.

Elephants and Endless Agonies

Many studies have been made on elephants, elephants in the wild as well as elephants in captivity. All have proven how intelligent, social, loving, caring, and emotional elephants mostly are. And how depressed they can get when deprived of their basic needs for well being.

Elephants will help their kin when in need, elephants will come to the rescue when they see another one hurting. They will stay with their dead, mourning vigilantly.

Knowing all of these facts, it is even more appalling what some of these beings have to live through. In Japan, there is Hanako. Hanako has been living in a concrete prison for over 61 years. In the United States, Nosey has been forced to “perform” even though she visibly shows signs of pain and has not been treated for the severe arthritis in her joints. Lucky, also in the United States, has been in captivity since 1962 and has been forced to stand on concrete floors most of her life.

All these stories could have a happy ending. All these elephants could be brought to one of the amazing elephants sanctuaries there are. One of them is the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. This sanctuary has already agreed to take in Nosey if her owner would only let her go.

There are many other sanctuaries around the world. The animals would all be better off if only they could get there.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel for a future generation of orcas: Sea World may no longer breed orcas in San Diego.

“The California Coastal Commission voted to approve SeaWorld’s plan for a new orca prison, but only after a commissioner proposed a key amendment: no more breeding. This significant change would ultimately end captivity for long-suffering orcas in California. SeaWorld was furious and left the chamber in a huff.

SeaWorld was forced to admit that it intended to breed even more orcas to fill the new tanks and that it would not support a ban on breeding. All but one of the commissioners voted to require a breeding ban anyway! This action ensures that the 11 orcas currently at SeaWorld San Diego will be the LAST orcas to be condemned to a nonlife of loneliness, deprivation, and misery at the marine park if SeaWorld proceeds with its Blue World Project.”

Please never visit Sea World or other aquariums that cater to amusing people with animals imprisoned for life.

No More Primates on Japan Airlines

With pressure mounting on those airlines that still have continued flying animals to a life of torture and death, Japan Airlines has committed to stop taking in this kind of cargo.

“Following repeated requests from PETA and PETA Asia, Japan Airlines wrote to PETA earlier this month: “We don’t ship primates to laboratories and laboratory suppliers at the moment and will not ship them in the future.”

The announcement comes after PETA notified the company in April that an animal experimentation journal reported that Japan Airlines was actively involved in the transport of monkeys from the Philippines, and possibly other locations, to laboratories where they are likely imprisoned, cut into, infected, and killed.

Japan Airlines joins virtually every major airline in the world in banning these cruel shipments.”

The Only Place Where One Should See Traps Is in a Museum

There were times, when people needed furs to survive in the harsh climates of northern America. Hunters would set up traps, returning to the sights days or weeks later, hoping some big animal would be waiting for them, waiting to be put out of their misery. It is known that some animals have gnawed off their own feet or leg to escape the torture instruments.

Not only are furs no longer needed by anyone else than the animals wearing them, but to use such a medieval type of trap should be banned completely. Traps belong there where all instruments of torture belong: in a museum – if not demolished.

“If passed, the Refuge From Cruel Trapping Act (H.R. 2016/S. 1081) will save countless animals on national wildlife refuges from becoming ensnared or killed in steel-jaw traps, Conibear traps, and snares—archaic devices that cause immense suffering. Frantic victims caught in steel-jaw traps commonly snap their bones, tear their flesh, or even chew off their own limbs in order to free themselves. Conibear traps drown, crush, or suffocate their terrified victims, and animals caught in snares slowly strangle. In addition to causing extreme suffering, these medieval contraptions are indiscriminate because any animal, including beloved animal companions, can fall prey. And the trapped animals aren’t the only victims, because trapping tears wildlife families apart and leaves dependent young animals to starve.
