Good News: TripAdvisor Will Stop Selling Tickets to Some of the Cruelest Tourist Activities
There was a time when it was believed that dolphins enjoyed swimming with humans. That might have been true when the animals were able to swim with someone by choice but being held captive to perform this kind of action is cruel and inhumane.
There also might have been a time when elephants would have helped a human by letting this person sit on their back. But being forced to carry tourists around has nothing to do with choice or pleasure or freedom.
And to believe that baby tigers would willingly leave their mothers to sit on a tourist’s lap is either very naive or worse.
Trip Advisor has listened. The company will stop supporting this kind of cruelty.

A Camera Can Be as Deadly as a Gun
Friends just returned from a trip to Thailand, sending me a picture of them with two tigers. They unknowingly had been lured into a typical tourist trap. The tigers were being held in a place that claimed to be a “sanctuary”, but in reality cubs of many different species are torn from their mothers, confined into tiny cages and only taken out for photo sessions with tourists. Once they grow too old or become too dangerous to handle, “acting up” despite severe punishment they are sent off to farms for canned hunting.
“Do you remember Cecil, the beloved lion who was illegally lured from a Zimbabwe park and painfully killed with a bow and arrow last summer? Unfortunately, despite the public outrage of this sad and very unnecessary death, thousands of other lions continue to suffer at the hands of the tourism industry today.
World Animal Protection has investigated the lives of captive lions in Africa and were appalled by what we found. We are desperately trying to help these lions, but they need your help too.
| What We Found
Lion cubs bred in captivity are ripped from their mothers at less than a month old. At just a few weeks old, cubs will begin to be handled by tourists for pictures, often roughly, causing them chronic stress and sometimes injury. Any aggressive behavior they display is punished using fear and pain. Tourists are even instructed to hit the lions if they act unruly. When they are not being handled, they are kept in small concrete enclosures and fed inadequately. |

As the cubs grow into lions, they will become too dangerous for these tourist parks. No longer profitable as toys for tourists, the lions might be euthanized or sold to farms for “canned hunting.” Canned hunting uses whatever means necessary to ensure a kill, including drugging the lions or luring them with meat. The area is enclosed so the lions cannot escape. They do not stand a chance at survival.”
Sadly, this happens all around the world, with tigers, lions, almost any wild animal.
Please never pay for having a picture taken with a wild animal. Never ride an animal, be it donkey or elephant.
If you want to visit an animal sanctuary, ask people who know where to find a legitimate one, most animal welfare organizations will be able to point you into the right direction. Tell your family, tell you friends.

Cute cuddly little tigers are an easy way to attract people. But who asks what happens to these animals once they are no longer little but grown, weighing easily 400 – 500 pounds?
“Did you know there are around 5,000 captive tigers in the United States right now?
This is what I learned when I began conducting research on America’s tiger population seven years ago. What’s more astounding is that nearly 95% of these tigers are owned by individuals, not zoos.
Of those people who privately own a tiger here in the US, most aren’t trained to care for animals in general, let alone tigers. And, unbelievable as it sounds, there is no complete record of captive tigers in America.
The exact number of tigers living in captivity outside of zoos and accredited institutions in the US isn’t clear—some say it could be double what we estimated. What we do know is that it’ssignificantly more than the number of wild tigers in Asia.”

Petition: Tigers + Fire = Torture

Depending on your age, you might have grown up going to a circus with your parents and being amazed by the beauty and agility of lions and tigers. And having an adrenaline rush when one of these imposing creatures would walk by in the arena.
Nowadays, it is hard to believe that there still are people who have not yet heard about the sheer unbearable conditions these animals have to live in.
“Caesars Entertainment owned Harrah’s casino in Laughlin, Nevada, is scheduled to present Dirk Arthur’s “Wild Magic”—an illusion act featuring tigers and other wild cats—despite Arthur’s lengthy history of animal abuse. We urge you to join PETA in demanding that Caesars end its affiliation with Dirk Arthur immediately.
During a recent U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspection of Dirk Arthur at Harrah’s in Laughlin, federal inspectors found that Arthur had cruelly forced two tigers and a lion to undergo painful declawing procedures in violation of a longstanding USDA policy, subjected a snow leopard and a bobcat to unsafe and hazardous conditions in enclosures, failed to use adequate barriers to protect the animals and the public, denied the cats the opportunity to exercise, and failed to provide the cats with sufficient space to “make normal postural and social adjustments.”
Whereas tigers, lions, and other big cats are apex predators with home ranges of up to hundreds of square miles in the wild, the big cats used for Dirk Arthur’s magic show are housed in tiny transport cages at the casinos and, according to the USDA, deprived of sufficient space in which to move about—and they have no opportunity to exercise.
The USDA has also cited Arthur for disregarding other minimum standards of care prescribed by the federal Animal Welfare Act, including multiple citations for forcing big cats to remain in metal cages outside a Las Vegas casino in excessive heat with no protection from the summer sun. These citations included two occasions on which temperatures reached upward of 120 degrees.
While agreeing not to work with Arthur in the future is a first step, it is not enough. By continuing to host this abusive exhibitor this summer, the company is condoning cruelty to animals.
Please take a moment to demand that Caesars Entertainment cancel “Wild Magic” immediately!”

Are there really people out there who find a caged, lonely, miserable tiger worth stopping for and viewing him as an attraction? And not wanting to find a better place for him?

Urgent update: Pending a veto from Governor Bobby Jindal, Tony the tiger will continue to languish in a cage as a roadside attraction. Please act NOW and tell Governor Jindal to veto Senate Bill (S.B.) 250 and send Tony to a sanctuary!
Tony the tiger has been caged and used as a tourist attraction at Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tête, La., for more than 10 years.
Unfortunately for Tony, Louisiana Senate Bill (S.B.) 250 was designed to appease owner Michael Sandlin and allow his continued custody of the suffering tiger, despite the fact that his captivity of Tony was declared illegal by a state court of appeal. The Louisiana legislature should be ashamed of itself for creating a loophole to skirt its own state’s animal-protection laws just so that a truck-stop owner—who has repeatedly violated federal law by failing to provide tigers with adequate veterinary care and safe and sanitary housing and by handling tigers in a way that causes them undue stress or trauma—can continue to use a caged, deprived tiger as a sad “mascot.”
Tony deserves the chance to roam an area that is measured in acres instead of just feet and inches. PETA is calling on Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal to veto the legislature’s ludicrous move, and as we have offered for years, PETA stands ready to help transport Tony to a sanctuary that will give him a real life.”
