Good News: Virgin America No Longer Supports Sea World
Thank you to all who spoke up for the animals at Sea World. The more voices there are, the more they will be heard and there is a chance of saving the lives of animals just by spreading the word.
“After hearing from PETA, Virgin America, the U.S.-based airline that serves several popular cities across North America, removed SeaWorld from its rewards program. Virgin America joins a growing number of travel companies, including Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and STA Travel, that have made the compassionate decision not to promote SeaWorld. However, Virgin Group—the conglomerate that formed Virgin America—is a separate company, which is why we still need to urge Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Group to stop promoting SeaWorld.”

What do Aquariums and Food Markets have in Common?

So you think staying away aquariums that keep dolphins will keep the dolphins safe playing happily in the waves? Sadly, not only aquariums looking for exhibition “pieces” are a threat to these animals. In several countries dolphin meat is a delicacy and guess who also makes profits from the sale of dolphin meat?
“The low rumble of engines cuts in the morning air as a row of fishing boats drive their catch toward the rocky shore into the shallows. Their targets? Dolphins. Once they trap a pod in a shallow cove, they capture some of the dolphins to sell to aquariums. The rest are brutally stabbed to death.
Every year, these “drive hunts” kill hundreds of dolphins and small whales in Taiji, Japan. It may surprise you to learn that Yahoo! Japan is profiting from this slaughter by selling dolphin and whale meat on its website from these hunts.”

Good News: Vancouver Aquarium Stops Breeding of Whales and Dolphins

If you ever have been to an aquarium you will probably remember seeing big animals in little water. As child, I must admit not understanding what this meant for these animals who can swim for so many more miles than I could ever imagine. But not children put these creatures there. Adults take them out of their natural habitats, build confinements and then tell their children to come and watch. Hopefully, this kind of “entertainment” will soon be a thing of the past.
“It’s a happy day for whales and dolphins! Thanks to your help, the Vancouver Park Board voted unanimously Thursday night to introduce a bylaw to ban the breeding of captive whales and dolphins at the Vancouver Aquarium, the only exception being if a committee decides that the animal in question is in danger of extinction. The board also voted to conduct a study to determine whether whale and dolphin well-being is possible within the confines of captivity. Both moves appear to foreshadow an all-out ban of marine mammal displays at the aquarium, of which the mayor in Vancouver is still in full support.”

Update: Irrawaddy Dolphins Survival Chances

The World Wildlife Fund had asked for support in their fight against dam in Laos that would lead to the certain extinction of this docile species. Here is a recent update:
“We asked you to join us in saving the last Mekong Irrawaddy dolphins living in the wild and thankfully you did!
In fact, more than 200,000 supporters like you responded to our call to stop the Don Sahong dam. Thank you!
We’re seeing results quicker than we ever imagined: Two weeks ago, the Laos government told dam developers they would have to go through a formal consultation process. This consultation is likely to delay construction and requires Laos to conduct further studies on the project’s environmental and social impacts and share them with key groups.
Despite Laos’ decision, we cannot call it a victory. The fight is not over yet.
Please share the petition with others and ask them to help protect the last 85 Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong River. We’ve created special e-cards for you to send and help spread the word. We also made Irrawaddy dolphin wallpaper just for you.”

Petition: No Dolphins and Whales as People Attraction in Vancouver

More and more aquariums, zoos and circuses are learning that the public no longer wants to see damaged, unhappy, suffering animal souls.
The Vancouver Aquarium is no exception.
“In exciting news for cetaceans in Canada, the Vancouver Park Board is considering a ban on marine mammal displays at Vancouver Aquarium. This decision would be a 180-degree turnaround from the board’s former mission of actually expanding the number of whale tanks at the aquarium and would place Vancouver’s aquarium on par with Toronto’s, which does not display any large marine mammals. You can read more about the Vancouver Park Board’s change of heart here.
We need you to contact the members of the Vancouver Park Board and ask them to follow the lead of Toronto’s aquarium and reject the continued display of whales and dolphins at Vancouver Aquarium. By taking action, you will be playing a huge part in ensuring a better life for marine mammals who are denied everything that is natural and important to them in captivity.”
