Update on Nosey, the Elephant

It is hard to believe that over six months have passed since rescue efforts have started to help Nosey go to her retirement home at an elephant sanctuary. Several animal welfare organizations have been trying to end the elephant rides, have tried to talk the owners of Nosey about letting her go, but until today to no avail.

Volunteers have continuously demonstrated at the sites where Nosey is being forced to work. Letters have been written, posters have been exhibited, demonstrations have taken place, but there has been no change.

What possibilities does the animal welfare community have to come to the aide of Nosey? If you have some advice please share it. You can contact either one of the following organizations:

It´s summer time, the kids are out of school, the weather is mostly nice, and parents are looking for some easy and fun entertainment for their family. Fairs are abundant all around the country, there are rides for all ages and shrieks and laughter fill the air.

There are also rides that mean torture and abuse: on the back of ponies, horses, and more exotic, elephants. Some of these animals have been going round in circles for many decades, no matter what kinds of aches and pains they feel. There is Nosey, who has not had a chance to get out of this life long abuse; there is Hope, walking with pain day in an day out. And there are many more. They are kept because people will pay to have their children enjoy a moment of “fun”. Mostly not knowing how many hours of sadness fuel a moment of pleasure for their child.

Some elephants die of exhaustion, some will simply collapse, some will try to run away. All have endured a life of imprisonment.

Please do not ride any animal for fun. Please tell the parents of your children´s friends not to keep this vicious circle of abuse going. If there is no money to be made, there will be no more pain.

Here is one animal suffering for years and years, it is time to end this. Please spread the word, speak up, stand up, help:

“We’ve just learned that the suffering elephant Nosey (aka “Tiny”) is appearing at The Great Lakes Medieval Faire in Rock Creek, Ohio, again this year, even after an elephant expert and veterinarian observed Nosey at the fair in 2014 and warned fair owners that Nosey was showing signs of debilitating arthritis.”

Please sign the petition, please share, please speak up for Nosey:

Dogs Helping Elephants = Win/Win

2015-05-15

There are some dogs who love to play. And then there are some people who know how to give these dogs something to do. Together, they have the chance to help fight crimes against wildlife, especially against the ivory trafficking villains.

“We’re sniffing out wildlife crime.

Our Canine Detection Unit trains dogs to sniff out illegal wildlife contraband like ivory and rhino horn – and they’re really good at it.”

The African Wildlife Foundation gives more information here:

News on Nosey

Nosey, the mistreated elephant, still has to perform. Even though she is known to be of ill health, her owners will not let her go to live a better life at a sanctuary.

“CompassionWorks International has just released an undercover investigation of Nosey. Watch the video at www.cwint.org/investigations.
As a result of the investigation, a complaint was filed with the USDA for numerous violations of the Animal Welfare Act.”

If you have not yet signed the petition on behalf of Nosey, here is more information:

Saving One Elephant at a Time

photo: PeTA

photo: PeTA

In the last weeks we have heard news about some circuses thinking about retiring their elephants – but not before 2018. That means three more long years imprisoned and tortured for “entertainment”. Most zoos should at least follow suit since most of them are not capable of caring adequately for the lives of those imprisoned in their care. And some elephants need immediate help due to their health status. Three more years in their current situation is a death sentence. Asha is one of these animals.

“Local news outlets are reporting that Natural Bridge Zoo will remain closed for the foreseeable future. The facility was scheduled to reopen the weekend of April 4 after being closed for the winter, but on April 3, 2015, a judge refused to restore the facility’s state permit, which was suspended following numerous violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act. When the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries suspended the facility’s state permit on March 9, 2015, it stated that “many of the animals are confined under unsanitary and inhumane conditions.” We will continue to keep you informed of any developments. If you haven’t already taken action, please sign our petition urging the zoo to retire Asha the elephant.

The Natural Bridge Zoo (NBZ) in Virginia has held the elephant Asha under deplorable conditions for decades and denied her the companionship of other elephants, which is devastating for such a highly social animal. Join PETA in urging NBZ proprietors Karl and Debbie Mogensen to prioritize Asha’s well-being by retiring her to an accredited sanctuary.”

If you are near Fairfax, Virginia, next week, please come and support the anti-cruelty demonstration:

“The Ringling Bros. circus is coming to Fairfax, Virginia, and animals need your help! In order to force elephants to perform tricks, trainers beat them with sharp metal bullhooks. Lions and tigers are whipped and beaten. Ringling has announced that it will phase out its elephant acts by 2018, but retirement for these animals needs to come now. Please help put an end to this cruelty by joining local PETA supporters in rallying against the use of all animals in circuses.”

Bildschirmfoto 2015-03-31 um 08.57.56

There is a glimmer of hope for a better life in the future of Nosey the elephant:

“The USDA has ordered Nosey out of the circus where she was performing in Texas and back to Florida for a veterinary check!

Thank you to the 163,000+ of you who signed this petition and sent letters to the USDA asking them to act on behalf of the long-suffering Nosey. Your voice has been heard!”

Thank you for helping and we will keep you updated on Nosey´s progress.

Do keep in mind to let your city officials know that you do not want circuses with animals performing in your city.

One Elephant Saved

It does not take much to help an animal in need. This elephant´s story proves that speaking up on behalf of a being who cannot speak for himself can change the world for this being:

“The Allahabad High Court issued a ruling to keep Raju the crying elephant free and in our care instead of going back to a life of shackles and abuse. We are so grateful to all the people around the world who helped Raju by donating or by signing the petition on Change.org.”

Thank you for helping this elephant!

Let’s Help Nosey to Retire Permanently

Photo: PeTA

Photo: PeTA

Thank you to all of you who have spoken up for Nosey, the elephant. If we all stick together and speak up there is a chance of giving Nosey a life in freedom.

_Other animals have also suffered in Liebel’s neglectful hands—the USDA has cited Liebel for keeping Reggie the spider monkey in “extremely dirty and soiled” enclosures, leaving him tethered dangerously to a pony, and allowing him to escape for six weeks. In 2013, Liebel was ordered to pay a $7,500 penalty and to cease and desist from violating the law following nearly three dozen charges of violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

Nosey cannot suffer any longer. Please join PETA today in politely urging the FWC to revoke Liebel’s captive wildlife permits and elephant ride authorization.”
