A Glimmer of Light at the End of the Tunnel for Whales and Dolphins

Even though the largest part of the earth is covered by water, and most of this water is in the oceans, humans have reduced the safe living space of whales and dolphins so much so, that the chances of becoming extinct has risen dangerously over the past decades.

Most of the time, news from the conferences concerning the exploitation of the oceans is disastrous for the animals. This year, for the first time, the Greenpeace correspondent returned with a bit of positive information.

“The International Whaling Commission met this past week in Portoroz, Slovenia. …

The IWC is extremely polarized, very much like our current Congress. The competing interests of the pro-whaling nations versus the nations prioritizing whale conservation has left this institution in gridlock for years. This year’s multiple gains for whale and dolphin conservation is a fabulous achievement.”

Petition: Sharks Need Their Fins – You Don’t

Photo: Greenpeace

Photo: Greenpeace

In some minds there still remains this picture of the big bad white shark, a man eating machine, not an animal. An animal with feelings, especially pain when the fin is cut off. An animal feeling fear when dropped back into the ocean and not being able to swim.

“Pulled from the water, a shark thrashes helplessly as its fins are hacked from its body. Mutilated and in pain, the shark is thrown back into the ocean. Eventually bleeding to death or suffocating.

Each year this torture is how millions of sharks around the world needlessly meet their end. All so their fins can be sold in soups served at expensive restaurants and fancy weddings. The shark fin trade is cruel, unsustainable, and it’s being fueled in large part by the tuna industry.”

Petition: Whaling for “Research” = Deliberate Extinction of Whales?

Photo: Greenpeace

Photo: Greenpeace

For many centuries whales and other sea creatures have been hunted by humans. For most of these water species this meant hunted until extinction or near-extinction.

Several countries have signed agreements to no longer hunt whales and the whale population seemed to have stabilized (another way of saying that at least there were still some animals left). Whales are not only threatened by huge ocean liners that hit them, by the noise pollution in the seas, by plastic and other debris humans simply dump into the waters, but also by still being hunted “for research”. Now what kind of research is there to be done on those animals that will soon no longer be there if hunted further? Is this not a paradox in itself?

“Greenpeace just received a leaked proposal that the US plans on submitting to the International Whaling Commission (IWC) next week, and the news is terrible.

Here’s what it says: “lethal sampling (also known as whaling)…is appropriate in relation to achieving the stated objectives.” Translation: You can kill as many whales as you want if you promise to run experiments on their dead bodies.

It’s killing whales disguised as science. And it’s something that the US government has long rejected. Until now.

Take action and tell the US government to drop this proposal to kill whales.”

Petition: Great Videos Make Great Marketing

Video: Greenpeace

Video: Greenpeace

Greenpeace made a video showing what Lego´s relationship with Shell Oil could lead to.

“Last week our worst fears came true. A deadly oil spill struck the Arctic.

Luckily, this oil spill only affected the mini world of Legoland. But the bad news is that LEGO is refusing to end its partnership with Shell, whose drilling plans threaten the pristine Arctic with a very real disaster.”

Petition: Do You Still Eat Fish?

Photo: Greenpeace

Photo: Greenpeace

Photo: Greenpeace

Photo: Greenpeace

Where do those fish sticks come from? Most children – and some parents, too – have no idea that somewhere in there, there is a fish who used to live in the ocean. And this one fish was more often than not caught in a way that make most people stop asking for fish if they saw how this fish came to their plates.

Greenpeace has been very active in exposing companies that pretend to fish according to the rules but break them more often than not:

“All across the country, we’re preparing for Independence Day picnics and backyard BBQs with friends and family. During trips to the supermarket to stock up, let’s make sure we’re not hurting the blue — our oceans — as we celebrate the red, white, and blue.

For shoppers at Kroger stores nationwide — their seafood purchases are likely linked to ocean destruction.

Take action today and ask Kroger to stop its damaging seafood policies that support destructive fishing and hurt our oceans.

Seafood at Kroger is sourced from some of the most destructive fisheries in the world — many that rely on gruesome fishing methods that indiscriminately injure and kill other marine animals, like sharks, turtles, and dolphins. These unintended victims — called bycatch — are just thrown back into the sea dead or dying.

Kroger has said that they are committed to seafood sustainability — even going as far to put a sustainability video online — but our independent research has shown the opposite. Kroger is the worst Red List offender out of the top 26 major grocery stores nationwide, selling 18 threatened Red List seafood species. It’s inexcusable. ”
