Elephants Performing – Help This Become a Thing of the Past

Elephant ride and activities Thailand

Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle—a “luxury camp” in Thailand—continues to force elephants to give rides and play polo, despite claiming to give refuge to endangered Asian elephants. Offering these rides sends a dangerous message to tourists and drives demand for an abusive industry that controls animals through violence and domination. Dozens of travel companies have committed to not offering rides, and as a result of the public’s “mood shift” against the use of animals for entertainment, Ringling Bros. circus has shut down after 146 years. It’s well past time that Four Seasons ended rides and all other direct-contact activities with elephants.

Please take a moment to urge Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle to end the use of elephants for rides, polo, and all other exploitative activities.

Good News:Virtual Reality Surgical System Replaces Practice with Live Pigs

Technologies in many fields are advancing at an ever faster pace. Some of these save lives, and some of these also save lives of animals in a different ways.

Many doctors had to do their training on live animals, but now there are some fascinating replacement technologies that not only save human lives but also the lives of other beings.

Obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) doctors-in-training at renowned Rush University Medical Center in Chicago will no longer practice surgical procedures on live pigs. Thanks to a collaboration between the hospital and PETA, medical residents will now train on a state-of-the-art virtual reality surgical system.

“The surgical experience of our residents takes a huge leap forward as we move toward a more humane and effective method of simulation training,” said Dr. Xavier Pombar, the OB/GYN residency director at Rush University. “Representatives from PETA have worked steadfastly with our department toward this goal. I cannot thank them enough for their efforts.”

Now this news has to spread so that more doctors can learn without harming other beings.

Some Good News on Animal Welfare

Here are some victories for the animals, thanks to many compassionate people and PetA:

  • Retailers are learning that compassion is always in fashion: Armani agreed to stop selling fur, and Dynamite announced that it will no longer sell angora wool.
  • A church in Washington canceled an event that was to include a “Chicken Chase” with awards of live baby chicks for participants who caught chickens.
  • The city council in Asheville, North Carolina, voted to ban dangerous horse-drawn carriages.
  • Officials in Dickson, Tennessee, made the compassionate decision to cancel plans to kill ducks and geese at Luther Lake.
  • GEICO promised not to feature chimpanzees or other great apes in its commercials again.
  • Dangerous legislation in Colorado that would have secured a “right” for hunters and anglers to kill wild animals was defeated.
  • Air Transport Services Group told PETA that it’s ending the transport of monkeys to laboratories.

The more people stand up for those who cannot speak for themselves, the more change away from suppression, torture, killings and ignorance can be seen.

Baby Seals Slaughter: A Never-Ending Story?

The following gruesome numbers have been made public by PeTA:

  • 33,600: the number of seals who have been slaughtered so far this year on the ice floes off Canada’s east coast

Should We Wipe Mosquitoes off the Face of the Earth?

This is a very insightful and informative post from a fellow blogger:

Animalista Untamed

It’s funny how certain incidents stick in our minds while others just fade away in the memory fog. Do you find that? These are a couple that stuck in mine:

The first was a friend ‘liking’ my Animalista Untamed Facebook page and adding the comment, “Love animals and love people who also love animals. I do mean all animals though, not just the pretty ones.” Look lady, I said (only to myself though, not to her!) I’m vegan. I believe in reverence for life and ahimsa. I feed slugs for goodness sake. I’m not just into fluffy bunny rabbits.

The second was a friend watching me stop kids stamping on a colony of ants that were scurrying busily about on their day’s assignments. Later, sitting in her kitchen she saw me absently touching my bare arm – a reflex to a slight tickling sensation. “Oh, so you don’t mind killing mosquitoes then!”It seemed like she couldn’t wait to say…
